Champignon Witch (2026) Episode 8 「White Witches and Black Witches」

Only just started book five in The Brothers Karamazov but Alyosha and Lize are so sweet and sincere with one another in this conversation!

Lize so far has been kind of unserious so seeing her more genuine side come out has totally convinced me of this pairing. And I thought Alyosha was being his regular kind self, nothing special, but when the narrator told of their childhood habit of building lovely stories together and how this conversation brought that spirit back to Alyosha, I was so charmed.

Champignon Witch Episode 7 Review - Journal Therapy

All the problems I had with the previous episode are being resolved in this one. Wow. I’m amazed. Manga has a tendency to resolve issues by saying they’ll do it but go back on their words at times. Fortunately, this is one of the cases where change is implemented positively.

Lize’s lack of progression is actually because Luna takes out the mushrooms when he sleeps. The mushrooms contain negative emotions as well as the memories of why they occurred, meaning that he loses a portion of his memory each time they are extracted. This hinders his progression, so Luna actually works hard to find a way for her not to do this method so that Lize can remember the things he learns and progress with his magic.

The magical mushroom paper is a creative idea in that any sort of unpleasant thoughts turn into small mushrooms and float away. Instead of using a tool to write, he has to use his mind and magic to make it form words. Only the good stuff are recorded in the paper. The entries can be scrolled through like a tablet too. There’s no mention of Claude in the entries because all of the stuff he writes about him are negative and turn into mushrooms. Also, poor Minos. He’s playful, but he’s not aware that his actions bother Lize.

Other than that, the dynamic between Luna, Lize and Claude feels like an odd found family with Luna being the mother figure, Claude being the deadbeat dad and Lize being the son. Speaking of which, I do wonder when Claude will start easing up because his grouchiness can be a bit of a hindrance. He mostly exists as exposition because Luna is too quiet and reserved to explain everything about the world. I wonder if that’s his only role other than watching over Luna as requested by his master.

Still, even if the two develop a platonic mother-son relationship, remember that Lize is actually older than he is. He was fifteen when Luna first saw him, but he shrunk down after getting the poisonous mushroom out of him. If some time has passed, Lize is technically somewhere between his late teens to early adulthood. So, there is a possibility for a romance angle between the two and it’s hinted with Lize narrating the story of him and Luna. First, Lize needs to understand Luna as a person.

The Lord of the Forest returns as a tiny mushroom. I find that cool that he can maneuver around the forest in the form of tiny mushrooms as his true form is probably a stagnant large mushroom that’s rooted to the ground. By the way, if you’re unsure if the mushroom is the Lord of the Forest, they have the same voice actor.

I’m sure things will change positively later on. Maybe Lize can go into town to get his own groceries now that Luna knows he doesn’t like her cooking. Maybe he can help Luna’s reputation get better? Who knows? However, it does make me wonder how long it will take until something goes awry again… Let me know your thoughts on this episode.
