Spiderman is without a doubt my favorite superhero. Always has been. But it’s about more than Spiderman or even Peter Parker. The whole “anybody can wear the mask”? That’s what it’s really about. Spiderman is the person holding the door open for the woman with a stroller. Spiderman is the kid on the playground who smiles at people just because. Spiderman is my mother, doing everything she can to be everything her mother wasn’t. Spiderman is my father, working a 9/5 job that he hates to make sure his family is secure. Spiderman is every person who’s ever done some good. Spiderman is a hero yes, but I think it’s easy to forget what being a hero actually is. I know a girl who fosters dogs from abusive homes. I know a boy who studied math every day even though he hated it so he could tutor his little brother. That’s being a hero, just as much as saving people from burning buildings is. It’s nice to remind myself, when I get caught up in how hard it seems to be to make a difference in the world, that small acts of good are still acts of good. Nothing is too small a problem, nothing too small a service. The Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman is a good reminder of that fact.
