Just Best Friends
A/N:This is my first fic so feedback maybe? Thanks to anyone who actually reads this!
Title: Just Best Friends
Genre: Fluff?
Description: Dan has no idea that he likes Phil. He assumes it’s just how best friends feel since he hasn’t ever had one before Phil. Starts with cereal thieving! A zoo visit may be involved.
Chapter One
Dan woke up to sun streaming through the window. He blinked, mumbled a few curse words at the bright light, and put a pillow over his head in a futile attempt to go back to sleep. After a few fruitless minutes of tossing and turning, Dan got up. He stumbled into the kitchen to get breakfast, only to find that Phil had eaten the last of his cereal.
The day was not starting out well for him.
“PHIL!” Dan knew that Phil didn’t eat it to be mean, but he was still waking up and the fact that his cereal was gone made him irritated.
Soon enough Phil’s dark head of hair peaked around the doorway. “Yes?”
“You ate all of my cereal again. Now what am I supposed to have?” Dan exclaimed, holding up his empty box of Shreddies
“You saw nothing…..” Phil drew back from the doorway and Dan could hear his footsteps fade into the lounge. Dan sighed, put down the box and followed him. He found him sitting on the couch browsing Tumblr. Phil looked up, a slight smile on his face.
“Are you hungry?” he teased. Dan sat down and looked out the window. It was already ten and the sun was shining even brighter, no clouds to be seen. Then he glared at Phil.
“Well seeing as someone ate all my cereal, yes I’m hungry.” He growled.
Phil pretended to cower, but laughed. “ That’s what best friends are for!” Then he changed his tone, “You know I feel bad about that. How about I make it up to you by paying for brunch, yeah? It’s a great day, and I think you’re getting grumpy after being holed up in the flat so long.” Dan paused, and crossed his arms like a tired three year old.
“Fine. And I am not grumpy.”
An hour later, after hair straightening and getting lost on the way, the two finally sat down at a window seat in the new cafe Phil had heard of.
“Are you sure about this place?” Dan asks somewhat disgruntledly, as his stomach was growling loudly due to that morning’s cereal shortage. He jumped at Phil’s touch on his shoulder. It was as if someone had given him an electric shock, which was something Dan noticed had been happening more often when Phil touched him.
“Of course I am! PJ told me about this cafe and the great breakfasts they serve. And I thought you might like the fact that it’s called Free Internet.” Dan smiled involuntarily at Phil’s excitement.
Phil’s eyes sparkled mischievously as he pumped his fist in the air. “Hah! That’s the first time you’ve smiled all day!” Dan immediately faked a frown, grumbling something about being mad at Phil.
“What did you say?” Phil was grinning even harder, and Dan was having a hard time pushing down another laugh. Phil had a knack for making him laugh, much to Phil’s pleasure and his own displeasure. It was like Phil had a hold over him, even though Dan couldn’t figure out why.
“I said, I’m mad at you!” Just when Dan thought he couldn’t hold the giggle in any longer, their food came. He jumped on it like a ravenous animal, because that’s what he felt like at the moment. After a minute of steady forkfuls, Dan looked up to see Phil’s untouched plate and smirking face.
“Stop watching me! It’s your fault I’m this hungry!” That only made Phil laugh harder. Dan smacked his arm and focused on his eggs. He could feel a blush creeping up into his cheeks, so he said, “Phil, stop staring at me like a creep and eat your undeveloped chicken fetuses.”
Phil groaned but started eating. “Will you stop calling them that!”
Once they finished, they decided to walk around London. Dan teased Phil that it was only because he wanted to attract more crazy people to talk about in his next video. That’s when he realised that it might sound to other people like he was flirting with Phil. Dan was lost in thought about this, and didn’t notice the bus rumbling towards him.
Phil lunged for his arm. “DAN!” Dan felt himself be jerked backwards, and then felt a rush of air on his face as the bus passed right where he had been standing
“Holy Jesus, Phil, I almost died!” Dan breathed heavily. Phil looked shocked, but also excited.
“Why are you so excited? Let me repeat, I. LITERALLY. ALMOST. DIED.”
“Yeah, yeah. But did you see what was on the side of the bus?!”
“No Phil, I was too busy ALMOST DYING.” Dan repeated dubiously, surprised and a little bit hurt that Phil didn’t seem to care.
“We should go to the Zoo! It’s such a nice day, and they have lions! That’s what the advert said on the bus! ”
Dan rolled his eyes, still a bit put out about how Phil was acting. “I bet everyone else has the same idea.”
“It’s a Wednesday. Besides, Dan, I bet they have llamas!” Phil knew how to get Dan, though Dan wondered why he gave in so quickly.
“Fine. But if it’s crowded and they don’t have llamas, you’ll be sorry!” He threatened, holding up a fist.
Thirty minutes later, half of that time on Google maps and the other half complaining from Dan, they reached the front entrance to the London Zoo.
Phil was jumping up and down, looking so much like an adorable little kid that Dan couldn’t help but grin. Then he realised that he had just called Phil adorable in his head. He knew it was the perfect adjective to describe Phil’s personality, but it felt different this time. Confused, Dan pushed back the weird feeling in his stomach and put on a grumpy face.
“You’re paying since it was your idea.”
They walked around the zoo, which was fairly empty, proving Phil right. Dan eventually loosened up, because who can’t resist a trip to the zoo? One of his favorite parts was when they got to the lions. Phil was elated, and he asked Dan to take a picture of him with the lions. They stayed there until Dan finally warned, “Phil, I’m going to find the llamas with or without you.” He started to walk away, but soon heard footsteps running up behind him. It pleased Dan that Phil didn’t want to be without him, for a reason Dan chalked up to not wanting to be alone in the zoo himself.
“I want to be there so I can take a picture of your face when you see them.”
It ended up with Phil asking directions from one of the zookeepers because Dan was too embarrassed to ask himself. The woman pointed towards the enclosure, smirking at Dan’s obvious excitement, making his already red face a shade of deep crimson.
“Aww Dan, don’t be embarrassed, she just can’t handle your man-childness!” Dan hit Phil on the arm in protest but quickly pulled back. He couldn’t think of a good comeback. After an awkward silence, they finally came upon the llamas. Dan turned to ask Phil to take a picture, but he was already filming his reaction.
So Dan pointed, smiled, and exclaimed. “Llamas, Phil, look!”
“I see them Dan.” Phil was grinning from ear to ear. No matter how much Phil irritated Dan, he just could not resist a smile from him. He couldn’t deny that Phil was definitely his favorite person. So much for being mad at him, Dan thought, then sighed.
That’s when he noticed how ominously dark the sky had gotten.
