The barista across from her slid the mug across the counter, but Darcy, who had lost some of her usual coordination over the past couple weeks, didn’t react quick enough and the mug slipped right off the edge, past her hand and shatter onto the floor next to where she was standing beside the coffee bar, some of the latte splattering her dress on the way down. She stood with her mouth hanging agape, hoping no one but the server had caught the embarrassing scene.

Toby had both of Danny’s hands in his as he kneeled, genuflecting like he was proposing. Much to the amusement of the rest of their picnic lunch group. “Man... I know you didn’t wanna make food commitments... but would you make me-” his voice got emotional. “-The happiest man alive...” for the bit, he brought Danny’s hands up, and gave a dramatic kiss to the back of them. “If you accept the lunch trade. I know Uncrustables for two bags of chips might sound like a risk... because it is... but let’s tackle it together.”

          “ i know it’ll be hard to not be the van zandt at the center of attention , ” jt looped his arm around danny’s shoulders and grinned. he loved the kid ( though he wasn’t so much a kid anymore ) like the brother he never had. but there had been a time last year , when he thought he’d lost him , too. along with liberty. now here they were , an hour before her party , and all was good. “ but on behalf of the liberty van zandt party planning committee , i thank you. ”
