Does Wingo ever confess his crush to DJ? If so, how does it go?
Okay so short answer: no, I don't think Wingo ever confesses.
The way longer answer is...well...their relationship exists in this really weird emotional limbo. What's interesting is that they both know something is there (just to very different extents), but they're both afraid to question it.
Wingo eventually becomes aware of his feelings. It actually takes him a while because DJ is one of his best friends, which makes it much harder to separate romantic feelings from just...loving your best friend. If DJ had been some random guy he met, I think he would've figured it out much sooner.
And I think that's exactly why he'd never confess. A confession wouldn't magically untangle years of whatever it is they've got going on. If anything, it'd probably complicate things even more. Because he knows DJ.
And DJ...uh- he's kind of a mess when it comes to feelings. In general. He doesn't like sitting with them. It makes him uncomfortable. He'd much rather keep himself busy, keep himself stimulated- anything to avoid those quiet moments where he'd actually have to think and feel.
When it comes to relationships, he's honestly not a romantic guy. He's shallow about them. He looks for quick fun and doesn't really care to put effort into anything long-term.
But Wingo is different.
The thing is, DJ doesn't have the emotional awareness to understand how he's different. He just feels that he is. He's aware that something about Wingo doesn't fit into the same box as everyone else, but he doesn't have the words for it. And he's scared to question it.
Not because of sexuality, though. If you asked him what he's into, he'd answer "women" without hesitation. That's exactly why Wingo confuses him. Why him?
Wingo kind of understands this about DJ. They met first, they're closest in age, and they've always been a little closer than the others. That bond just kept growing in the background while both of them had flings, girlfriends, hookups... until they eventually started messing around with each other too.
Knowing all of that, Wingo just wouldn't risk forcing an answer.
Silly comparison, but you know how people say the best way to tame a stray cat is to let it come to you instead of chasing it? Yeah... that's basically Wingo's approach with DJ.
Anyway, Wingo'd rather have DJ in his life than push him into confronting something he isn't ready to confront.
And the funny thing is I don't actually think they need a confession to become "a thing."
I think they just slowly drift into it. They start acting more and more like a couple without ever really deciding that's what they're doing. They sleep together, rely on each other, choose each other first, build their routines around each other...until one day everyone else is looking at them like "...aren't you two basically dating?"
Ask Wingo and he'd hesitate. Ask DJ and he'd probably go, "No?" And somehow they're both are telling the truth
That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. It absolutely does, especially after Wingo realizes what he's feeling and spends a good while trying to convince himself it'll pass. Meanwhile DJ keeps talking about girls and other adventures.
On top of that, I think they're both (consciously and unconsciously) afraid of ruining the gang's dynamic.
Honestly, I think Boost and Snot would notice something was off before either of them fully figured it out. Not necessarily because they know what's going on, but because they care about their bros and don't want either of them getting hurt.
I also feel like I'm kinda rambling, but it's hard to explain because I don't really build their relationship by thinking "this is the plot". I build it by putting myself in their heads and following how they'd feel.
I don't think I've ever found wording that captures them perfectly. Every explanation feels like it's missing something, which is pretty of fitting tbh.
What would you say about the Kabuto Ninjas? Do you even have any thoughts about them? Everyone keeps forgetting about these guys.
Fun guys, actually! Design wise, even if it's simple, I like how sleek they look. I haven't fleshed them out too much yet, but I do have a few rough ideas:
I like to hc them as guys who got involved in some shady business and now can't really get out.
I also like to think there'd be some rivalry between them. They'd always be trying to prove who's more competent, more reliable, and worth keeping around. Years of working together have made them weirdly in sync, tho- they rarely have to explain what they mean to each other.
They don't talk much about personal stuff, but they've got plenty of inside jokes and know exactly how to get under each other's skin.
Oh, and they absolutely love laughing at their boss (Kabuto) behind his back.
also just to add onto the wingo and dj stuff. i'm sure everyone knows about this detail already but i'll never get over the fact that dj joined the DRH because of wingo designing a custom paint job for him :] these two are so special to me
^ THIS.
Like...imagine someone making you a whole ass custom paint job just because they thought it'd suit you better- that's so cool!!!
Oh yeah, man, I'm ready to add that about the scenes here too. From the PSP version of Cars: The Video Game, you can also see how the two interact with each other: DJ laughs at what Wingo says, and Wingo giggles along with him, despite trying to be cool. They're always close, and the funniest thing is how DJ accidentally gets bumped by Wingo when he sees Chicco. It's really cute
WAIT I actually forgot about that!! >:0 Really need to go back and watch it again
One more addition to the DJ/Wingo collection LMAO 💙💚
Okay, I just noticed this fairly recently. I'm so devastated by the lack of content featuring them that while rewatching that iconic scene from the movie and looking at the character designs themselves, I noticed that Wingo and DJ look remarkably similar. The most striking detail is their headlights. They literally share the same style, with lots of bulbs. They also differ from, say, Boost and Snot in that they have more detailed paint jobs. Both have huge spoilers (yes, DJ's is pretty big too, to be honest, and so is Boost's, but I'm talking about those two specifically). And if you're really crazy like me, they even have a similar color palette: DJ's is blue-green, and Wingo's is purple-green.
I thought a lot of people noticed this (especially the fact that the headlights ARE SIMILAR), that they're more similar in style than Boost or Snot. And as a bonus, it wasn't just for nothing that we all decided that DJ and Wingo were best friends and close to each other?
I think their looks also played a role.
OHHHHH okay yeah yeah yeah!! Thanks for explaining cause my stupid ass decided to overthink the other ask for some reason.
YES I've noticed these things too!! Especially after getting their diecasts and staring at them for an unhealthy amount of time lmao. And as you said- the headlights especially!! And yeah, they're definitely the flashiest, most eye-catching designs out of the four
Also let me add to the craziness because oh boy, you are NOT alone
Speaking of the color palettes- yes, Wingo is purple-green, DJ is blue-green... BUT DJ also has purple. His eyes 👀 (eyes be the window to the soul ykyk-)
And let me stray away from the designs for a second- I was on a call the other night and somehow ended up overanalyzing DRH's positioning during the introduction scene. One thing I noticed is that DJ and Wingo are the only ones standing on the same "line". They're basically mirroring each other with Boost in the middle- DJ on one side, Wingo on the other. It kinda gives them this visual equal footing/visual balance?? It's one of those tiny things your brain just picks up on. And then at the end of the movie, when they're paving the road after getting arrested...guess who's standing next to each other again
And going beyond the movie itself, I also find it interesting that they're the only two who beatbox in their voice lines in the Cars game. Maybe it's just a fun coincidence, but it really makes me think they either have similar interests or simply spend more time together
So yeah, I definitely think little details like these probably contributed to the fandom collectively deciding they're close in one way or another
I LOVE this kind of stuff!! Character design, staging, little behaviors...it's crazy how much they can tell you without ever saying it outright!
I'm just as sad as you are that Pixar hasn't made enough content featuring the tuners. They're literally the ones who could make cool spinoffs and even boost profits (as Disney loves). They haven't even fully fleshed out their story. We don't know how Boost met his team
I'm also glad the fans love them so much. Now I have a question. Did you notice how Wingo and DJ look alike in their tuning body?
RIGHT?? there's still so much we don't know about them. missed opportunity but oh well too bad- I specifically would've loved more voice lines from all of them (especially Snot...PLEASE give my man something to do other than sneeze😭)
as for Wingo and DJ... I'm actually not entirely sure what you mean! 👀 I'd love to hear more though, now you've got me curious :3
