I don't draw a ton and I was really rushed cause I had a lot of personal stuff going on during the time I knew about this challenge, so I'm not completely happy with the way it turned out. That being said I really wanted to participate in @creatingblackcharacters Melanin Beam Challenge and I figured there was no better time to start creating fanart of a story that has been near and dear to my heart for most of my life. Happy Birthday to Miss CBC!

Reference and design thoughts below:

For both of them it felt important to me to do some sort of protective hairstyle as their story takes place on a long journey away from the comfort of home. I wanted to achieve similar silhouettes for their hair to how the original designs look and I'm pretty happy with how that turned out. I decided Lloyd wouldn't feel any need to be able to change styles frequently and would likely I stead prefer the permanent choice of locs. He also joined the journey very last minute so I wanted it to be something that he would have had in for a long time already. I don't know how well I did, but I didn't want the locs to look too freshly twisted, he happened to have them they weren't a choice for the journey. On the other hand Colette had her entire life to prepare for this journey, so I think she would have gone and gotten her braids done with just enough time to be comfortable for the big day. Otherwise I think she'd just wear her hair out in an afro. I spent a while considering keeping her blonde, I had initially wanted to make redesigns of the whole main cast and we have some funky hair colors so I figured I'd just keep everyone's hair basically the same color as canon. With a little further thought though I decided that whether intentionally or not, given the context of her character the original designers likely made her blonde as a tell of her being this really pure, innocent character and in light of that realization it felt like it suited her better to just have a very natural hair color which in this case would be brown.

I hope I did an okay job making this respectful despite the somewhat low quality.
