WEEK 3 - This is How You Connect Practice with Society
This week we talked about “Can I be a Social Agent if I am an Artist/Designer?” and “What is Socially-Engaged Practice?”
First of all, I would like to answer the question, “Can I be a Social Agent if I am an Artist/Designer?” Yes, I think I can be a Social Agent if I am an artist/designer, because it could be said that designer/artist is an intermediary who conveys messages to society through designs and arts.
“What is Socially-Engaged Practice?”, often called social practice or socially engaged art, encompasses any art form that involves people and communities in dialogue, collaboration, or social interaction.
“Barbara Kruger”
She explores and conveys about feminism, gender, consumerism, political, and social through her artworks such as “Your Body is a Battleground” and “You Are Not Yourself”, with her design style using effects and pasting words on the image.
Class Activity : Create 1 - 1.5mins documentary about local issue you consider important to highlight.
We were asked to form a group of 4 and create documentary of 1 - 1.5mins about local issue in 45 minutes, then my group started to discuss on what local issue we should focus on, we decided to do documentary of Singaporean slang words/Singlish as three of us are foreigners and at first we had difficulty to understand Singlish. In the video we mentioned some of the Singlish words such as “Shag” means tired, “Sian” means bored/tired, “Alamak” means damn/an expression of shock, “Phaiseh” means embarrassed/ashamed, “Can One” means sure can, etc. Singapore is a country with a lot of tourists and international students, In my opinion, by using a proper English will help us communication with each other more easily.

GST is all that matters in the Rompin by-election
COMMENT
WHO will replaces the late Tan Sri Jamaluddin Jarjis as the Rompin representative may take a back seat in the by-election here.
If anything, the May 5 polls is a litmus test for how unpopular or detested the recently implemented Goods and Services Tax (GST) is.
Prices have already increased — some due to unscrupulous quarters — while the understanding of how the system works and how it is supposed to benefit in the long run is vague to the man on the street.
Neither have the blunders made by some Cabinet members helped in clearing up the issue.
What may be of concern for the ruling coalition, though, is that the GST is a very local issue, despite it being implemented nationwide.
It is closer to the hearts and wallets of people than blocked drains or potholed roads.
Unlike the recently passed Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota) or the amended Sedition Act, not many — in comparison with the GST — would lose sleep if a politician were to be arrested for sedition.
Whether one could afford to feed one’s family and make ends meet is a different matter altogether.
In fact, it is all that matters.
And in a by-election, local issues tend to be at the heart of a campaign.
The Rakyat Post has heard many grouses about the GST among Rompin folk. A party insider also revealed that even those among Umno are not giving the GST the red-carpet treatment.
So why should regular voters?
Which is why I feel, when it comes to issues alone — internal bickering aside — the person who explains the plus points or perils of the GST better would earn a vote.
So it comes as no surprise that PAS, who is going up against Umno, will campaign around the slogan that one vote for the party is a vote against the GST, while a vote for the BN is akin to favouring the tax.
The BN, therefore, must explain the GST properly (and I believe it is aware of this as some of the conversations overheard revolved around clarifying the consumption tax) if it wants to avoid a reduced majority in this by-election.
