I think a really nice part of Mando's character is the fact that, over the course of the series, we see him learn how to utilize that big heart he's got. It's always been there, his affection has always been a part of him, he just didn't have the means, or reason, of expressing it pre-show. Not to undermine all the work he's put in, he's made it such a long way, even in Season 1 alone, but the fact that he chose to believe his birth parents stowed him away out of protection and not that they abandoned him says a lot about his character at its core.
