Apparently Vita Sackville-West called this "a sinister little flower, in the mournful colour of decay", I think it's beautiful. Fritillaria meleagris, the snake's head fritillary, other common names I swear I'm not making up but which seem to point to everyone absolutely hating it and its gothic, pixelated magnificence: Lazarus bell, leper lily, dead man's bell, death bell, doleful bells of sorrow drooping/mournful/solemn bell of Sodom, Madam Ugly, weeping widow and widow veil. Slow signs of spring springing everywhere. Buds and shoots, snowdrops and daffodils... and summer plumage appearing on black-headed gulls - so that's less confusing. Each time I've posted a photo of one I've felt like I've written 'look at this black-headed gull with a clearly white head'.
