she saw somewhere that skin to skin contact was overly important the first few months, holding their newborn so her little cheek rests against her shoulder as she holds the little one close where she sat on their bed. it’s all still so new to her, how she could love someone she just met so much. but they did that. one hand reaching out for dean’s, a small smile on her lips. “she’s just so small..” cassie says, pressing a kiss to their sleeping daughter’s head. “here, deanie. did you wanna hold her?”
Uncertainty was making him feel uneasy, causing Dean to want to step away instead of approaching— oh and what exactly was he uncertain about? Many things, actually. He was a father now, he was responsible for raising a whole another person— he would have to always make sure she was safe and happy and wow, how the hell was he supposed to do that?
Teaching her the importance of family, how to protect herself, how to be strong and push through the pain no matter what— yeah, that he could do. But… What about everything else? He had only ever learned how to be a good soldier from his own dad, the old man hadn’t been very concerned about setting the best examples for him and Sam nor had he cared about teaching them much about anything that didn’t involve guns, supernatural beings and such.
So Dean didn’t really know where to start— what to do to be a decent father. All he knew was that he wanted this little girl to have a childhood a lot different than his— he wouldn’t force her to fight and would allow her to just… Be a kid ( something that he was never allowed to be, truth be told ).
What if he somehow let her down though? He had messed up, failed several times in his life before and what if he did again, and his daughter ended up hating him?
Dean was afraid, terribly so— clearing his throat when he realized he’d been in silence for too long, arms resting at his sides and not moving to take the baby from Cassie. “I…” he began, frowned slightly, almost looking confused as he went silent once more.
She was so small, fragile looking and he was not used to dealing with delicate things like that. Fear had its nasty arms wrapped around him, keeping him frozen in place. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, honey. What if I— I dunno, accidentally drop her?”
