Esteban shows up with a single red rose.

Not a bouquet.

Not a dramatic gesture.

Just one rose.

Charles squints at it like it’s a technical regulation.

“…Is this for me?”

Esteban shrugs, pretending to be casual and failing spectacularly. “You said once that big gestures are embarrassing.”

“I said that about public proposals.”

“It applies.”

Charles takes the rose.

There is a pause.

“You know,” Charles says thoughtfully, “you are very brave.”

Esteban narrows his eyes. “Why.”

“Because you are giving a Ferrari driver a rose. On Valentine’s Day. In front of cameras.”

Esteban glances around.

There are, in fact, cameras.

“…I did not consider that.”

Charles smiles, that soft, almost private one.

“For the record,” he says, twirling the rose between his fingers, “I would have preferred chocolates.”

Esteban deadpans. “Give me the rose back.”

“No.”

“You just insulted it.”

“It’s my rose now.”
