As the preacher’s sermon was interrupted, as his final congregation walked out on him for good, a board snapped off the roof. Then another. Then another. The Wanderer and Chipper watched from a distance as the roof caved in gradually, time catching up with the church, the slow rot taking hold all at once. The preacher was now silent. “So what was that all about?” Chipper asked. The Wanderer shuddered. “I don’t know.” “Was he telling the truth?” Chipper asked. The Wanderer shuddered. “I don’t care.”

Chipper’s most recent master was an older, mercurial fellow named Meolu. He was strict, irritable, and impatient with Chipper’s elliptical and whimsical way of being. He was more likely to snap at Chipper than to speak to them, a far cry from the warmth and love of their mothers. Other masters often spoke of Meolu as one of the most knowledgeable among them, and that in his youth he once held the same excitement and curiosity about magic as Chipper did now. The years had hardened Meolu, and he was hard in turn. Chipper was on their fourth consecutive week learning with Meolu, and started every session with a smile.

A merchant’s stall sat by the side of the river road. The Seeker was the only one to approach. He was stunned, at first. Of all his time wandering this forsaken place, he had seen many people and many signs of civilization as he went, none so rare and benign as actual commerce. Everything he had before joining the gang was either pillaged or stolen from people who demanded his life without a damn for his money. This was the very first time he had ever seen an honest merchant on Moapa. The same was true for the others, and for this reason they were horrified.

NEW FALLING SUN CHAPTER!
She then looked at the older one; or, at least, she attempted to. As she focused on the man with her clockwork eye through her scope, the man--if he was a man at all--seemed to shimmer and waver like some kind of mirage. The boundaries between he and the space he occupied were blurry, slippery--shadows clung to him in ways that they oughtn’t to, and shadows appeared on him that were not cast by anything she could see. His gaze was far off, unfocussed, as though he was lost in some trance or dream. He didn’t sway as he walked or as he stood, seemingly unbothered by the heat, the terrain, or any need of the flesh. Tannis spent a lot of time watching people and creatures move, watching how they occupy the world around them. Most beings exist in some immediacy to their environment, operating in immediate response to the air around their skin, the ground under their feet, the light in front of their eyes. There is a clear distinction between what space is person, and what space is not. When Tannis looked at the older man, it was as if his mind and body were a vast distance removed from the material world, as though what lay before her were a projection of some far off consciousness. Human? Possibly. Dangerous? Definitely.
