Mac believes he can fly
The log jam at the bend of the river.
Last winter’s logjam - Skokomish River.
if it's ok to ask, what do you mean that The Acronym was coined specifically to erase queer struggle? i feel like i missed something, but with time what you're saying seems more and more true.
it's totally okay to ask! I wish I was a better reporter and could assemble a masterpost of historical resources about it - others have! and I reblog them when I see them
to try to encapsulate my lived experience with the whole history involved I guess I'd say: queer people did not all jump on board when people started saying "the GL community" (that's how it started). That argument kept going:
acro: mainstream society didn't (and still doesn't) like queer people, so why not let them have this acronym? queer is definitively not normal… queer: this erases so many people, and we're not trying to let mainstream folks feel comfortable, we're specifically trying to change things. that's why we started doing these science projects about it. we're not trying to uphold value being attributed to normalcy. it's dangerous. acro: hm what? oh actually there was a big fight at the Charis bookstore and now we're calling it the LG community. queer: you weren't listening were you
it kept going. the Q was added on after the millionth AIDS funeral and the LG supremacy had to make some concession to decency.
I mean, aside from anecdotes and upsetting myself that's the best way I can put it for you right now. there are more diligent and measured queer history blogs on tumblr; I try to represent their material as much as possible -
- right now, in the modern world, I view the acronym-community the same way I view popular communism: a terrible tragedy that has nothing to do with any sane solutions or real life's work / another brutal reminder that the only real work is done in space, with other people, in the immediate field of building a world to live in. Indigeneity is more important to my queer self to learn than abeyance to the ever-shifting and frankly malicious-feeling needs of the acronym and its sponsors.
plus I mean: fucking terf and transmed soup; I'm too old to keep hearing the same bad-faith arguments over and over. the acronym looks like a warning sign to me, now - tumblr has accomplished this for me :\ I struggled for years with resentment at how that all played out over the course of decades - watching the internet relitigate and get even more viciously right wing about it… ended the guilty feeling. Reawakened the 'last fighter in a blaze of glory' vibe of the 1980s. "Surrounded by a sea of born again christians". Same feeling.
it's better when I remind myself that most of y'all will learn what I did, but it is frustrating, because it feels like there's so little time left to save the world
