"Jesus fucking christ," Lydia exclaimed in exasperation as she gingerly extracted yet another unfortunate batch of muffins from the oven. The soft, warm glow of the oven's interior accentuated her furrowed brow as she lowered the tray onto the metal table, the clattering sound echoing in the dimly lit bakery. Roman had always been the maestro of this particular recipe, his baking finesse far surpassing her own, despite her ownership of the business. But now, he was gone and Lydia couldn't get it right for the life of her. Her mother, who used to offer sage advice over her shoulder, was no longer there to guide her. And now Cassie, as frustrating and stubborn as she could be, was six feet under, too. In a moment of frustration, Lydia hastily shed the oven mitts, flinging them carelessly behind her. She leaned forward on the worn tabletop, her head sinking into her hands. It was a silent plea for guidance, a desperate moment of vulnerability, as she grappled with the overwhelming weight of grief under the bakery's solitude.
The kitchen door opening pulled her back into her senses, rubbing her nose with the back of her hand before turning to face her little sister -- someone she wasn't expecting to see. "Sorry, I --" an exasperated sigh fell from her lips, gesturing towards the failed batch. "-- I can't get this fucking bullshit right for the life of me. Another two hours and fifty bucks of ingredients wasted." Lydia shook her head, meeting Logan's gaze then. "What are you doing here? Is everything -- are you okay?"
