If I had a penny for every time my favorite space wolf pairing consists of Great Wolf and his space marine with bear symbolic, I'd have two pennys. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. (trice actually but Ragnar lost his bear privileges)

So, more on that “chapter masters and librarians hijinks” idea (plus headcanons when it comes to chapter cultures and romance) under the cut.

Varro and Marneus are *married* married. No ultramarine pretty much remembers a time when they weren’t a unit. They’re very happy, very balanced, and generally have a super healthy relationship. They keep it on the down low when interacting with other chapters because some chapters prohibit romances between their Astartes, or have no marriage or marriage analogue at all, or would frown upon a chapter master and a librarian being together. They don’t even need to talk about it - there’s no question (to them or any other ultramarine) about their absolute devotion to each other.

Dante and Mephiston had a very “we ease the pain and the loneliness together” thing where they were with each other for ease and comfort but not necessarily happy or necessarily healthy. Mephiston tends to shut people out, Dante can’t really relax with someone who’s part of the chapter he’s supposed to guide and guard. Dante has also been in love with Gabriel Seth of the Flesh Tearers for a *while*, but also doesn’t really want to impose himself on Gabriel. Mephiston knows this, he’s actually very much in love with Dante (but can’t admit it) and now aggressively flirts with a very very confused Gabriel whenever Gabriel is in the vicinity to spite fuck him (Gabriel has zero interest in either, he’s in a long term committed relationship with his chapter librarian Balthiel, they just don’t talk about it so nobody knows).

Azrael and Ezekiel have been coworkers and confidants for a long time. Azrael always had kind of a little crush on Ezekiel, but their chapter discourages “crushes” (the dark angels go wild for courtly love - it must be grand and bombastic and filled with poetry if you adore a battle-brother, but it should also be completely chaste). Through working together, this developed into very strong romantic feelings. Ezekiel has various unexamined hang ups around intimacy and relationships due to his fucked up past. Azrael, on the eve of his primaris surgery, confessed to Ezekiel, not expecting anything in return. After Azrael survived, Ezekiel asked him to try to be together because Ezekiel wanted to be of service to Azrael (as I said, hang ups). He started slowly developing feelings after they started dating. They’re still very nervous and unsure around each other.

Logan and Njal are close, understand each other without any need for words, and are best friends. They also fuck. This isn’t unusual for space wolves, who tend to be the most hormonal chapter, but it is unusual (for wolves) that neither of them take other lovers. It’s mainly a power dynamic thing - they hate feeling like someone considers their rank while sleeping together, so they prefer to sleep with each other where rank isn’t really a concern (and the other option either would have would be Ulrik the Slayer who neither finds attractive). They’re actually surprisingly sweet and casual with each other, no matter who the audience is, and often touching each other and not making any secret whatsoever of the fact that they share a bed (also just to sleep - wolves need cuddles), even in the company of other parts of the imperium.

Unlike our boy Njal, I don't need no runes to see the future.

My positive sentiment towards the eventual Wolf Guard Terminator refresh has borne out, alongside an extremely handsome update to hammer-throwing hero Arjac Rockfist, now thankfully sleighless Logan Grimnar, and the aforementioned Njal Stormcaller.

As with all the other post-Leviathan Terminators, the new Wolf Guard are all suitably hulking and their various wolfskin trophies now look proportionate to their stature without overwhelming the model - consistent with other chapter-specific Terminator updates.

And, as an added bonus, they snuck a White Scar head in so you can bits out an ethnically Chogoran Terminator Captain.
