I feel like this is an incredibly niche post but no thoughts just Timothy Green from The Odd Life of Timothy Green and Logan Sweet from the Candymakers having the same energy. (tw for lots of discussion of death)

Being way too wise for a young kid. The way they look at life and live in the moment because you never know when it can be taken away? Appreciating what you have, trying to build and maintain strong relationships with the people around you? Being rooted in hope and optimism despite everything that happens? Serving as that beacon of light for other people throughout the story to help them become better? They’re both filled with so much love and so much hope?

Something about that movie and that book just have good energy. It’s so hard to take a story that deals with heavy topics and make it not feel crushing and scary and they both do it so well? Instead of getting hit with the hopelessness and the inevitability of bad things you find yourself really appreciating the moment and the little things that you have.

I know these are both not super popular things but I highly reccomend them Odd Life of Timothy Green is one of the best movies I’ve seen and tells such a beautiful story? It’s a wonderfully character driven film but it has all the mystery and whimsical aspect you want from a kids movie. It’s does a wonderful job of taking a movie about temporary time and making it feel happy instead of sad? It’s all bittersweet but so clearly focused on appreciating what you had instead of mourning what you’ve lost.

And the Candymakers by Wendy Mass? That was one of my favourite books for a long time. It’s another one that deals with loss BEAUTIFULLY, telling the story from four different character perspectives before coming together at the end. The contrast between Logan who lives his life to the fullest, appreciates every moment and tries to find joy in everything and Miles who is terrified of death, scared of losing someone again. The way they both grow and help each other to become more adjusted. And it provides such a wonderful message that death isn’t necessarily something you need to be scared of. If you spend so much time worrying about it you lose out on what’s really important, and what you do have that’s good in your life right now.

I don’t know, I always find I get really anxious when stories talk about death because although they try and do it in a positive light it so often ends up feeling like pressure? Like you have to appreciate your life before it’s gone, everything is temporary and it just comes across as scary? But both of these stories do such a beautiful job of addressing it in a kid friendly way and not making it scary. I know a few really young kids who are just terrified of death and I wish there was more stuff like this out there that made it a little less scary without glorifying it?

I love good character driven stories so much it drives me wild when you can set up a good story and have good characters express a hard to deal with problem and deal with it in a healthy and comforting way?

I find Wendy Mass books do a wonderful job of this her stories always had such good characters and the message taught through them never felt cliché? Especially 11 birthdays, I ADORED that book as a kid and I still do. I never talk about it much because no one I know has ever read it but it’s such a great story. It has an interesting plot but never loses focuses on the characters, and how at its core it’s a character driven story about two best friends who drifted apart. Her books were genuinely some of my favourites growing up and I read a LOT. I wish they got more appreciation.
