Wu needs his cane.
okay, this personal headcanon literally JUST came to me as i was reminiscing about the fact that my muscles are too weak to properly support my bones, and obviously that isn't great because straightening my posture shouldn't make me a bit winded and make my back hurt with every movement, but I suppose it's my own doing after years of neglecting exercise [even though I've had back pain ever since I was a lot younger and a lot rowdier, though I digress..]
so anyways.. Wu needs, actually needs, his walking stick/cane that he adorns early on, due to his muscles and bones deuterating and weakening due to his aunts abuse and neglect, all of the malnourishment, the starving and isolation through his childhood, because without the support and simply just having something to lean on makes it a lot easier for him to walk for more than 3 minutes without getting lightheaded or his back seizing up.
Mako doesn't know he needs it for the longest time, he just assumes its for show and dramatics, even playing into Korra's jokes and teases about Wu being dramatic and probably just using it to make a show of himself or something, until he DOES find out and he feels like absolute shit for making comments about it.
again, I came up with this headcanon because I do think it's utterly unfair that I'm in a loop of my back hurting and my muscles struggling to support my bones because of lack of exercise, then avoiding exercise because it fucking hurts like crazy because my muscles are weak as shit
Modern Pride Parade Wuko~
Wu is definitely a cape kind of guy. 😅 I love these two so much.
I'm going to make a little series of these. Who would you like to see next?
Imagine you and Bolin setting up your brothers Mako and Wu who you know like each other
Mako had stopped working for your brother over a year ago but still Wu spoke of him often. You didn’t think anything of it until you saw how your brother acted around Mako with your own eyes. You were visiting republic city together and had just checked into a hotel when Wu spotted the fire bender. Mako was with his brother Bolin but he heard Wu’s call from across the busy street. Your brother rushed across the road, darting between cars to meet Mako who then scolded him for doing something so dangerous. You watched the way Wu’s face lit up when he spoke to Mako and how Mako blushed when he complimented him and an idea formed in your head. “Hey y/n” Bolin said appearing beside you and you smiled “Hey Bolin how are you?”. You were the same age as Bolin and got along well everytime you saw him. “I’m good!” Bolin beamed at you “are you guys in town long? Maybe Wu and Mako would like to do something together? They seem happy to see one another”. You smiled at Bolin’s words and nodded “They do don’t they...hey can I ask you something?”. Bolin nodded “sure anything!”. “Do you ever get the feeling our brothers are...interested in one another?”. Bolin frowned “well of course they are! I know for a fact Mako is very interested in Wu”. “He is?” you asked and Bolin nodded “well duh he was literally paid to use his body as a human shield for him, I don’t think that instinct goes away when you’re a bodyguard”. “No not interested in that way, I meant interested in a different way....romantically” you added as Bolin just stared at you. Your words sunk in and Bolin’s face transformed from blank to a smile “oh my god how did I not see this earlier?”. “You think they do?” you asked and Bolin nodded “ow totally! Now i think about it Mako’s always extra moody when he likes someone and that’s exactly what he’s like with your brother! All grouchy and brooding, he does it every time and it always works”. You grinned “well I know Wu is smitten, he’s never had anyone be as kind to him as Mako but he’s such a horrible flirt!”. “Mako doesn’t understand flirting,” Bolin told you “Wu can leave as many hints as he wants there’s no way Mako will pick up on them”. You frowned “well if my brother won’t come out and say it and your brother is clueless how do we make this happen?”. Bolin frowned before grinning at you “ I got it!”.
You told Mako you had the perfect person for him. Bolin told you Mako wouldn’t trust him if he said that so you had to be the one to convince the fire bender to go on a blind date. It wasn’t easy. Mako by nature was stubborn but after a long time of encouraging, some slight threatening and a side of begging Mako agreed to go to the restaurant at the agreed time for a blind date.
Your brother was way easier. All Bolin had to say was “hey Wu there’s this guy..” and your brother was in. Still you walked your brother to the restaurant aware his confidence might suddenly vanish when he was actually faced with the occassion. You were correct. “So this date you and Bolin planned for me” Wu said toying with his tie nervously “you’re sure i’ll like him?”. You nodded “I know it”. “but you still won’t tell me who he is?”. “No there’s no fun in that”. Wu sighed “fine but really y/n who in this city would I like?” Wu asked gesturing widely to Republic City “I’ve met most of the men worth knowing in the city...there’s no gems hidden away I’m sure of it”. You smirked “you’d be surprised, now stop stalling, go inside he’s probably already there”. Wu frowned “but i’m scared”. “Don’t be i’m pretty sure he likes you so just go inside...”. “You’re not coming in with me? How will I know who he is?”. “Trust me you’ll know” you smirked giving your brother a shove “now go!”.
Mako walked into the restaurant and smoothed down his suit jacket as he waited for the host. He hadn’t worn this suit since his date with Asami so it was a bit tight-fitting but it was all he had. Mako had no idea who you were setting him up with, all you’d said was they were perfect for him. Mako grew more nervous as time passed and he wondered if he should just leave, if it was a blind date even if the person had seen him they’d have no idea it was him, there was still time when suddenly someone called his name. “Mako!! a familiar voice called and Mako turned to see the prince of the earth kingdom and his ex-boss Wu. “Wow you clean up well” Wu grinned in greeting “so what brings you here of all places on your day off?”. “Ow nothing I’ve just got a date” Mako said embarrassed and Wu gaped “no way me too! How about we make it a double date while we’re here?”. Mako frowned “I don’t think that’s a good idea, see it’s the first one so I think it should just be the two of us”. Wu nodded his head “that makes sense! Mines a first date too but I didn’t think of that”. Mako frowned “wait you’re on a first date too?”. Wu nodded and went to explain but before he could the host appeared. “So sorry for your wait sir, do you have a reservation?”. Mako nodded, you’d booked a table and told him all he had to do was say his name, “it’s Mako” he said half hoping the man would say there was no reservation booked so he’d get to leave. “Well I’ll let you get on with it then” Wu said and with a pat of Mako’s arm he walked back to his table. The host searched the list for so long Mako thought his wish was coming true but then he found it. “Ah yes, right this way sir” the host smiled and led Mako into the restaurant. Mako walked through, searching for empty tables that could be his but there were none. The host stopped at Wu’s table and smiled “and your companion is already here as you can see, can I get you some waters?”. Mako paused “wait no this must be a mistake, this can’t be the right table”. The host paused “this is the table that was booked...did you not make the reservation?”. “No a friend did it, she was setting me up on a blind date...” Mako paused “Wu who arranged this date?”. “Your brother, who did it for you?”. “Your sister” Mako said pointedly “they arranged this!”. Wu’s jaw dropped and the host paused awkwardly “would you still like the table? Everything’s already been pre-paid“. “Prepaid?” Wu cried and Mako raised an eyebrow “you know you’re a prince right?”. “Well yes but you still never pass up free stuff!”. “Great I’ll go get some waters” the host said rushing away and Mako sighed “but isn’t this....won’t it be awkward?”. Wu shrugged “I mean only if we make it awkward. How about we just pretend it's a normal dinner that our siblings didn’t formulate to try and get us together and just enjoy the free meal?”.
Mako stared silently for so long Wu worried he was going to storm out or just stay standing there forever but eventually and with a large sigh, Mako took a seat across from him. Wu couldn’t help smiling a little or stop the fluttering in his chest. He too had been blind sighted by this but he was quite happy with the surprise. When Bolin had told him he knew the perfect person to set him up with Wu was sceptical. He’d wanted to tell Bolin he was quite infatuated with his brother and that nobody he knew could ever compete with Mako but apparently Bolin already knew that. He smiled as Mako leafed through the menu with a confused look on his face. “If you need me to explain what any of the food on the menu are....” Wu started and Mako rolled his eyes “I’m fine”. “You sure, there’s no pictures in a menu for a fancy place like this” Wu tried to joke but it didn’t work. “I said i’m fine!” Mako snapped sharply and Wu’s smile vanished. He was happy to be on this date but Mako clearly wasn’t. A waiter arrived with water and interrupted the tense atmosphere but as soon as they’d gone it was silent once again. Wu went back to his menu slightly hurt and decided if Mako didn’t want to talk that was fine. He wasn’t desperate for conversation, he could handle silence. 30 seconds passed before Mako sighed loudly and put down his menu “i’m sorry okay, I didn’t mean to snap at you it’s just....it’s been years since my last date, all my relationships have ended terribly and so when y/n told me she’d found the perfect person for me...I guess I got a bit excited but now I just feel a bit humiliated”. “Because she set you up with me?” Wu asked his hurt feelings deepening but Mako shook his head. “No of course not! Because I’m in a suit that's 2 years old in a restaurant that’s too good for me, reading a menu full of things that I have no idea about! What the hell is a ceviche?”. Wu smiled slightly “it’s raw fish and fruit juice”. “Ow” Mako said “well that sounds awful”. Wu laughed and smiled openly “Mako I know this isn’t your typical scenery but nobody else thinks you don’t fit in, even in a 2-year-old suit you look exquisite....and that’s as far from humiliating you can get so you have nothing to worry about”. Mako looked down blushing and Wu felt his heart beat ever faster knowing he’d made Mako blush! He’d done that! After gathering himself Mako finally looked back up “thanks Wu”.
After that Mako eased up and was much more pleasant company. They chatted about work and gossiped before Wu judged Mako’s good mood as an opportunity. “So y/n said I was perfect for you?” Wu asked and Mako blushed again “yes, I will be having words with your sister right after this” and Wu smiled. “I just can’t believe y/n and Bolin got together to plan this!” Mako sighed “what did Bolin say to you?”. Wu looked down bashfully “that he’d found me the perfect man, someone I’d get along with great who was really good looking and a great guy....so I guess he didn’t lie”. Wu took a sip of his wine but Mako frowned “about which part?” and Wu almost choked. “I’m sorry?”. “Which part was he right about?”. “Well Mako I don’t know how this has escaped your notice but we do get along and you are a really great and good looking man”. Now Mako had difficulty breathing “really?”. “I seriously can’t be the first person to tell you this?” Wu asked and Mako blushed “no it’s just....I didn’t know you thought that”. “Well of course I do” Wu nodded and watched Mako eagerly. Mako just blushed and kept his eyes ever lower. Wu decided it was now or never and took a deep breath. “Bolin also told me that I knew the guy but had no idea he liked me, apparently we were both helplessly oblivious to our feelings for one another in his words, is any of that true?”. Mako gripped his fork tighter and stared “Well I...does that mean you like me?” Mako retorted and Wu shook his head. “Nice try but no police tactics Mako just answer the question”. Mako swallowed “i don’t know...I think about you a lot and worry about you and want to keep you safe”. “Probably because you were my bodyguard” Wu sighed and Mako could see Wu was disappointed which made him upset for some reason. “Yes but I think it’s more than that...I stopped working for you a year ago and still I find myself wondering what you’re doing, where you are...feeling the urge to look after you and make sure you’re okay...plus Bolin’s pretty good at knowing me better than I know myself so If he says I do then I think I might”. “I was looking for a yes or no type response” Wu frowned and Mako sighed “fine yes I like you!”. He smiled as Wu smirked and Mako continued “you’re so infuriating but I like that about you, nobody bothers me more than you”. “How poetic” Wu smirked and Mako coughed “wait but what about you! Bolin said you like me so do you?”. “Aw Mako i’ve been trying to get you to notice for years but thank you for finally asking me”. Mako blushed “really? Wow I am oblivious”. Wu nodded his head “you are but I still think you’ll make a good boyfriend”. Mako smiled and took Wu’s hand that was resting against the table “I don’t have the best track record but I promise for you I will give it everything I’ve got”. Wu smiled at Mako feeling as if his head was swimming when suddenly the waiter appeared with the cheque. “So I see the blind date was a success after all, does that mean your friends are in the clear?”. “Not a chance” Mako smiled.

You and Bolin were sat watching the adventures of Nuttuck in your hotel suite. You both desperately wanted to know how the date went on but also knew both your brothers would likely be angry and figuring Wu was less violent than Mako you chose him. You heard the door go and you both tensed. “What do we do?” Bolin cried and you shushed him “shhh act as if we haven’t heard him! If he comes to yells at us that’s a bad sign, if he disappears to his room....well then that's also a bad sign”. “And if he brought Mako back here? what does that mean?” Bolin asked and your eyes almost popped out of your head “he what!”. “Yeah I can see them clearly” Bolin said peaking out of the crack in the door “they’re talking and holding hands! Y/n we are the best matchmakers in all the four nations!”. You high fived Bolin and hugged happily “we’re going to be brother and sister!”. “I always wanted a sister!” Bolin cried hugging you again before you both settled down. “Okay do I even want to know what they’re doing now?” you asked and Bolin paused “let me check, okay they’re still out on the corridor, they’re walking, they’re walking, they’re getting closer, wait are they....abort!” Bolin yelled sprinting away from the door. Bolin jumped behind the sofa just as the door was thrown open. Mako and Wu stood there and fixed their unimpressed gaze firmly on you. “Y/n we need to talk” Mako said calmly and you backed up “ow do we because I was just going to bed and i....”. “You’re not going anywhere” Wu said sharply “and get up Bolin we can see you”. Bolin crawled back over the sofa and sat beside you. “So care to explain what tonight was?” Mako asked. Silence filled the room and then you and Bolin both simultaneously burst into explanations. Mako and Wu winced as you both yelled and somehow understood each other and gestured widely at them both. “Okay okay I think we can guess what you were thinking” Mako yelled to make you go quiet “either way it was not cool”. “Wasn’t it? I mean I saw you holding hands” Bolin sang and you grinned widely. “Just because it worked doesn’t mean we appreciated being blindsighted”. “But it was a blind date” you said pointedly “you’re not supposed to know who you’re being set up with”. “Yes but....” Wu trailed off trying to think of a way around your logic. “Me and Wu know each other, we’re friends, what you did could’ve ended really badly. You just happened to get lucky” Mako took over. “Sure we did” Bolin grinned sarcastically and you nodded “yeah I mean we totally knew it would work but sure we’re just lucky”. Wu went to argue but you just turned to Bolin “how about we leave the lovebirds to enjoy whatever they came back to the apartment for?” you asked him and Mako and Wu both went bright red. “I agree let’s go” Bolin said and the two of you waltzed out.
“They’re....” Mako stuttered and Wu nodded “menaces!”. “Yes!” Mako cried “total menaces!”. Wu nodded but a smile appeared on his face “but I guess we do have to thank them a little, they did get us together”. Mako shrugged “true, I don’t like how they did it....but I’m pleased they did do it”. Mako stared at Wu and Wu felt a blush rise to his cheeks. “I am too” he nodded and Mako smiled leaning in closer. The kiss was everything Wu had ever imagined it would be and he savoured every second with the fire bender. When Mako pulled away Wu sighed slightly and Mako smiled “it’s the first date that’s all you’re getting, even if you are a prince”. Wu rolled his eyes but smirked too “fine, guess I’ll just have to wait for our next date”. “That you will” Mako agreed standing up to leave “how’s tomorrow night sound?”. Wu grinned “perfect” and Mako blushed. “Well great I’ll guess I’ll see you then”. “Can’t wait” Wu smirked and Mako’s blush deepened and he hurried from the room. When the door shut Wu grabbed and cushion and screamed into it with happiness. Not only had he just been on a date with his crush, he had kissed him and also arranged to see him again! You were officially the best little sister in the world.

Yes I ship Wuko. No I will not take constructive criticism on the matter...I just think they’re adorable and get way too much hate as a ship than they deserve
Wu running towards Mako, Bolin, Korra and Asami after coming back from the restroom, as they all sit at a table in some small cafe, eyes wide, shoulders tense, hands shaking, breathing fast and unsteady, tripping to a stop besides Asami’s chair and slamming his hands down on the table, wasting no time to frantically start rambling ad waving his hands around, but..
he’s speaking in flawless Chinese.
no one else in the group speaks Chinese.
So asami, ever the patient queen she is with her friends, rests a hand on his shoulder and is all like, “hey, take a breath.. we can’t understand you, Wu..”
and obviously thats like the last thing Wu needs right now and he pushes away from her, standing up straight and shaking more violently and motioning around so much more frantically and he tries again, but it’s a mix of broken English, flawless Chinese and damn good Korean and pretty okay Japanese because he is just PANICKING and going through every language he can speak, which isn’t really helpful, since he’s making even LESS sense than before and everyone is starting to pick up on his panic and starting to panic too
And Mako ofc is all, “Wu, i need you to calm down for just a moment.. can you please try to get this out in one language..?”
And Wu, now having Mako’s hands slammed down on his shoulders, gets this pissed off look on his face and huff through his nose in a way that is oddly similar to a feral mutt, but i digress, and everyone’s a little put off bc they’ve never seen Wu like this and its kinda scary but whatever, then Wu finally takes a deep breath, grinding his teeth together as he tightly grips Mako’s wrists, tight enough to leave marks pretty much immediately, which is also shocking and perhaps awakening something in Mako rn but he’s in denial rn
“There is a corpse in the restroom, Mako.” Wu finally manages in English, but his voice is now sharp and the way he says Mako’s name carries a bit of frustration and bite, because obviously he’s pissed off that he saw not only a dead body, but he also couldn’t gt it across to anyone for like 7 minutes. He watches as EVERYONE’S faces shift to complete horror as the entire cafe goes silent and the air is still.
Man ill probably make a follow up or turn this into a short fic but my tooth is aching and im tired.
EVERYBODY ASK ME ABOUT THIS AU THAT I LITERALLY JUST CAME UP WITH PLEASE GOD. THE LORE IS FLOWING INTO MY BRAIN LIKE DRIFTWOOD AT SEA. LIKE A LEAF IN THE WIND. LIKE EMBERS AFTER THE CAMEFIRE IS PUT OUT. LIKE A WORM THROUGH THE DIRT. YES THAT IS ME TELLING YOU THAT IS AN ATLA/LOK AU.
And that's a wrap!! 15 #mermay this month! Finishing with Wuko~ Surprise Wu is a seahorse :D
