#3154 - Lolium rigidum - Annual Ryegrass

AKA stiff darnel, Swiss ryegrass and Wimmera ryegrass. Annual Ryegrass is a common name shared with Lolium multiflorum.

Native to southern Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, but a serious weed in Australia after it was introduced as a forage crop in 1880.

As well as being susceptible to the notorious Ergot fungus, and Take-all cereal fungus (Gaeumannomyces graminis), the species causes Annual Ryegrass Staggers in livestock, after the nematode Anguina funesta introduces the bacterium Rathayibacter toxicus to the flower spike.
