Last stops from our trip to Lompoc included wine tastings at Ampelos Cellars and Zotovich Vineyards. At Ampelos we enjoyed the lively tasting notes (see photo and magnify) and the lively wines that included their 2019 Viognier, 2015 Barrel Select Pinot Noir, 2015 Grenache, 2016 Syrache blend of Syrah and Grenache and 2016 Syrah - among others! At Zotovich we especially liked their 2017 Estate Chardonnay, 2017 Reserve Chardonnay and the 2019 “Zoto” Pinot Noir, among many others too. Check with both for their outdoor patio tasting hours. It’s been a few years since I got to chat and taste wine with Jalama winemaker Mark Cargasacchi, but once the wine started flowing (9am appt) it felt like yesterday! We learned a lot - full article on EveWine101 early September - but here is a taste for now: Mark has moved his tasting room to Palm Springs (currently closed due to Covid) but continues to make his wines in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto where we met up. The move proved quite fruitful as he has sold all of his library wines, sold out of his 2016 Syrah and 2016 El Capitan and most of his 2017s. What a treat to discover Montemar Wines! We not only enjoyed a lot of A LOT of the wine they make, during a quick tour of the grounds with Caryn the owner we checked out a large organic garden, a “beach”, an ode to several well-known musicians and later, barrel aged Grappa! This is a must-see stop, plenty of room to spread out while tasting whatever your favorite varietals are. We enjoyed Grenache Blanc, Sangiovese, Grenache, GSM, Syrah and Petit Verdot - but their wine list has nearly a dozen different Pinots, as well as plenty of Chardonnay, Rose, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvedre!
