What do you see from your kitchen window? For 20 years I’ve stared out at a dirt hill and gray cement pylons. We’ve had different ideas about what to do with it, but talking to Eric Mendoza about it (our genius landscape/hardscape expert who had already converted our front yard) we did this: a fountain waterfall with beautiful lighting and shrubs. We’re not done yet but I can tell you that it’s finally a pleasure to do dishes right in front of this! What do you think? What’s in your glass? It will be Chianti Classico for me very soon: Giovanni Mazzei will debut three new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione releases from Castello di Fonterutoli, the historic Tuscan estate where his family has been making wine for 24 generations. Castello di Fonterutoli’s vineyards are situated within the territory of three adjoining Chianti Classico municipalities: Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Radda in Chianti. Beginning with the 2017 harvest, the Mazzei family launched a new approach to its Sangiovese-based range of wines, aimed at highlighting the biodiversity of these three terroirs in three Chianti Classico Gran Selezione wines, each with its own inimitable character. . . . Wines we will study include: Castelllo di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione 2017 – made from a selection of the best vineyard plots surrounding the hamlet of Fonterutoli. Then it will be Vicoregio 36 Gran Selezione 2017 – a blend of 36 different Sangiovese biotypes deriving from 50 years of research, from the single Vicoregio vineyard. After that comes Badiola Gran Selezione 2017 - from the estate’s highest altitude vineyards, below the 12th century church of La Badiola. Any Italian food lovers here? Oops we did it again: back at D’Agostinos Trattoria in Las Vegas to try some of their other dishes including: Fresh Baked Garlic Cheesy Bread with Spicy Marinara - the bread was super flavorful and was only improved by loads of garlic and cheese! We finished it all! Then came “D’s” House Antipasto Salad: Crisp Romaine/Spring Greens/Grape Tomatoes/Roasted Red Peppers/Fresh Mozzarella/Soppressata/Kalamata Olives/Pepperoncini/Crispy Prosciutto/House Pickled Red Onions/House Vinaigrette - that crispy Prosciutto was a game changer! Next up was the Chicken Marsala described as: Lightly Floured Chicken Scallopini/Mushrooms/Lombardo Sweet Marsala Wine Sauce - the sauce was one of the best veal reduction sauces I’ve had, and the quality Marsala wine veteran Chef/Owner Dan Thompson used made it even more perfect. We also enjoyed some great wine, this time a Cabernet Franc from Provence recommended by their Court of Master Sommelier Kelly Booth. Lastly, don’t want to fail to mention that we were welcomed by name - and it was only our second visit - by Dan’s wife and co-owner Brandi Thompson. The House of Suntory, their distilleries, blended and single malts, different oaks for aging, rare and some discontinued = amazing tasting and lesson! It was the Yamazaki 18 that stole Eddie’s heart, and wallet if we could ever find it! While I was completely content with the Hibiki Harmony blend that benefitted from five different types of oak barrels. Will be putting my notes into a blog post soon! Right now I’m still dizzy from the tasting and all that we learned thanks to the Suntory Brand Ambassador Jonathan Armstrong and the Southern California Whiskey Club. El Sativo, the 2020 Tequila of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, launched this past summer. THE FIRST TEQUILA TO INNOVATE A “ONE OF A KIND” COMPOUND FOCUSED DISTILLATION, MAINTAINING THE BENEFICIAL ELEMENTS IN THE AGAVE. 100% Blue Agave – Single Estate – 100% USDA Organic – 100% NON-GMO – Certified OK Kosher… And this is what I thought: . . . Notes of vanilla bean, heavy sweet cream and toasted popcorn kernel – with no burn whatsoever – on the nose. The taste was smooth yet peppery – so interesting - and flavors reminiscent of buttered popcorn, and that same cream, ending with a spicy finish. Really liked having it both smooth and spicy! What would you drink? Shared some of the yummy food we had in Vegas recently, this is the DRINKS post that fills in the blank, to say yes, we did drink. Different cocktails at different places, and a little wine to boot. Started with 3 cocktails for $10 TOTAL that were surprisingly good, not to mention we were able to get both Tito’s Vodka and Bombay Sapphire Gin top shelf brands. Had an old school Tom Collins while the hubster had his usual vodka Martini. This was all at Ocean One Bar and Grille in the Miracle Mile shops. Then we checked out Container Park in Downtown Las Vegas where we enjoyed a Sazerac at Oak and Ivy. Enjoyed another Sazerac at Hexx in Paris hotel. And finally, had some red wine: At D’Agostinos Trattoria we found a nice Montepulciano that fit the bill! Which would you go for? During a recent trip to Las Vegas and we hit up 3 really yummy places off the strip! A lot less money, and really good. The video is at The Magic Noodle where they, clearly, make their own noodles. We had a Chinese Burrito with the yummiest sauce and the House Special with everything. Next we tried Brooklyn’s Best Pizza and since my Italian Mama is from Brooklyn, and we often went when we were kids to visit, I can tell you this was the real deal. Enjoyed Pepperoni, Meat Lovers and Grandma's Pie with cheese, tomato sauce, traditional pepperoni on top and spices. Halloween is what a week away? What are YOU doing? Pretty much low-key for us, no decorations and no parties. Yes, we drank pink with Tanya Green (the owner of Wine 661) and our pal Marlee Lauffer (President, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation; Vice President, Marketing and Communications) this past week. Another perfect evening over wine, cheese, charcuterie and all the trimmings: olives, seasoned nuts, fruit, crostini, honeycomb…at Newhall Press Room.
