he’d felt out of sorts for ages , what happened back in that hospital . how they were all just FINE with sacrificing a child for a cure that may have never worked . none of it ever sat well with paul , but with nowhere to go he’d stayed even afterwards . helped abby with mourning her father and even onwards with helping the washington liberation front . they’d all taken a different path though , it was obvious , and one he couldn’t simply follow anymore .
eventually he’d found his way here , and he’s not sure by fate or some unknown force he has found that the very man responsible for her father’s death is among the people here . perhaps , abby will never find her way here . so far so good because the man she is so determined to get revenge on is nothing , if not decent and good and everything she thinks he’s not . what happened was at least three years ago , paul has been here less than a year . he can only hope she’s given up by now .
❝ i didn’t find anything out there . seems pretty quiet . did seem to be a few too many infected , especially since joel wasn’t out there too long ago . might be something worth a look . ❞
she remembered how her uncle was always fixing something or another on the ranch. a younger version of herself wondered why nothing stayed whole for very long. even after being told the cattle sometimes liked to lean against the fence posts to help scratch their thicker hides the logistics behind all of it didn’t quite click. it wasn’t until she started caring for a number of people under extreme circumstances that she really understood the simple fact that things fell apart. while frustrating, it also gave people purpose.
while the patrols were out maria took the opportunity to keep her own mind occupied by fixing a few of the clotheslines that had fallen to father time. better than standing still long enough to let her thoughts wander.

❛ as do i, ❜ response comes quick, hands clasped together, gaze fixed on the other. wary, yet unthreatened. business works the same in this new world, and as he excelled at it back then, there’s no reason why that should change now. of course, this man’s mine means people ( most likely people he cared for ), whereas rio’s mine . . . well, he valued the ones who worked with and for him, that was clear, yet he valued himself the most. the different products ( supplies, guns, breathing living uninfected humans ) he moved — traded now, that’s what he means when he speaks of his. what he owned, what gave him power. the very simplistic meaning of his. no need to get further into it, he thinks.
❛ you seem like a sensible man, ❜ words come with a few relaxed nods, ❛ and from where i see it, this is a win - win situation. you loan me some muscle and get — what d’you need, huh ? medicine ? you can’t grow pills on trees, am i right ? i can hook you up with whatever you need, IF i get something in return. we have a deal ? ❜
100 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT QUESTIONS. / @lonesnipr said: “character questions: 050, 070, & 097.”
050 : how does your character feel about their mortality ?
joel accepted that he was going to die ( likely younger than the previous life expectancy ) during his time in the triage. at first, it might’ve been by his own hand. when they traveled out of austin, he figured if he died, it might as well be for tommy. then tess. then ellie. from his departure from austin onward, joel wanted his death to mean something for the sake of something he’d failed at before, at least in his eyes : love, family, & protection. will all those he’d crossed & killed in his life, the worry that sooner or later joel’s actions would catch up wth him lived in the back of his mind. especially post part one canon. he messed with a militia group, not to mention a possible cure for humanity for god’s sake. the only reason he feared what was coming to him then was what would become of his family. his role as a provider & a protector is too rooted in who joel is, or who he views himself to be.
there was no warning. the lock clicked open under his hands and she appeared out of nowhere, on his back in an instant, the sharp point of a knife digging into the thin skin of his throat. a gun would have been a cleaner option, quick and short and anonymous, but they weren’t afforded the luxury of loud weapons out here. too many infected. too many opportunities to bring the remains of a city down on them. it was why there were supplies out here worth fighting for at all.
and she’d been there first.
“if you wanna walk away from this,” she hissed in his ear, “then fucking walk away. now.” @lonesnipr
