Grains of the Future!
Hopworks takes their environmental message seriously. There are a lot of breweries that boast about being “green” -- the solar panels, the waste water recovery systems, the rooftop hop farms. But Hopworks always seems to go a step further brewing with only organically grown hops and malt, donating 1% of all sales to local non-profits, they are a Certified B-Corporation.
So for their latest brew, HUB joined Patagonia, purveyors of fine fleece products in a variety of colors, to make a new beer using a perennial grain that’s more sustainable than wheat. Kernza is a a deep rooted plant that can be harvest over and over without being replanted like traditional wheat. It’s still in the developmental stage, so Long Root Ale is a sort of experiment. Does this new grain make good beer?
I don’t know. It tastes pretty normal to me. There isn’t anything especially tasty about Long Root. It tastes like a pretty run of the mill pale ale, crisp, citrus inflected. Maybe a hint of some greener, weedier grains, but not really. So I guess that’s a good thing. Kernza doesn’t make the beer taste bad. We’ll see what happens in the future. Who knows, ten years from now Kernza could be the new rye.
