Most people only think in the immediate consequences

Genesis 2:16-17 says “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.””

In Genesis 3:6 we read that Eve ate the fruit and gave some to Adam. I can only imagine Adam seeing that Eve was still alive and thinking “Well, we’re going to be fine after all” and eating the fruit himself. But they didn’t. They both died, it might have taken a few more centuries then they might have imagined, but God wasn’t lying.

The problem is that when people do something and don’t see the immediate consequences of their action, they tend to think those consequences will never come.

Galatians 6:7 says “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” Well, different plants have different growth rates, some take days and some take months. The consequences of some of our actions, both good and bad, come almost immediately, but others might take decades or even our whole lives.

2 Peter 3:8-9 says “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
