"METAMORPHOSIS"

Born in Can Tho, Vietnam, Tran Nguyen now makes her home in Georgia. Tran's start in art came in copying every line drawing from her "Lion King” coloring book until she was able to draw them without reference. Today Tran says her biggest challenge, however, is still transcribing the ideas as she sees them in her head. "Everything that I've ever painted has rarely looked exactly how I initially imagined it" she told @PeoplesPrints . In recent years Tran's work has incorporated a hint of fantasy and her style has transitioned with frequent gold accents set against a more limited palette of cool colors. In 2019 Tran joined the @PowWowLongBeach team creating her largest mural to date at N Solano Ct and W 3rd St in Long Beach, CA.  @mynameistran/

"THE BUTTERFLY HUG"

In 1997 Hurricane Pauline struck Acapulco killing hundreds of the poorest residents of what may be Mexico's most affluent tourist haven. Working with survivors Lucina Artigas developed a self-administered BiLateral Stimulation technique called The Butterfly Hug—still used as a self-soothing technique in the mental healthcare field.... Born in Russia and raised in Syria, Dina Saadi now lives in Dubai and "uses art to speak her mind" and showcase her ideas. With the increasing influence of technology on people's lives Saadi doesn't believe mental health gets enough attention so when the opportunity came her way to paint this work at Chestnut and Broadway for @PowWowLongBeach she painted created this stunning expression of her concern.  @dinasaadi/

"UNITED WE HUG"

Long Beach, California artist and illustrator Dave Van Patten says most of his inspiration is "pulled from dark humor comics, 1960's surrealism, psychedelic garage rock albums, and modern societal absurdity." In addition to appearing in many other publications Van Patten has self-published several graphic novel "zines" and twisted “children’s books for grown ups.” A prolific muralist, in 2016 and 2017 @PowWowLongBeach shone a fresh spotlight on Van Patten’s work, "allowing his tiny comic drawings to span across entire buildings." In 2018 Van Patten partnered with @addamsartsproject and community leaders to create this intriguing visual at Atlantic Ave and 53rd St in North Long Beach.  @davevanpatten/

GHANA INSPIRED

Known as nwentom in the Akan lands of Ghana, kente cloth was originally a royal and sacred cloth and while use over time has become more widespread it remains an important symbol—so much so that kente academic stoles are widely used today as a symbol of pride by African American university graduates. Invited in 2018 to participate in Pow!Wow! Long Beach, Detroit artist Sydney James says her contribution on Raymond Ave at E 7th St was inspired by Ghana, and offers just a brief glimpse into the rich diversity of its textile designs. James' murals often portray powerful women of color, but always strive to evoke emotion and inspire positive change.  @sydneygjames/  @powwowlongbeach/

POW! WOW! LONG BEACH

One of those annoying people (not really) with way too much talent, that makes the rest of us look like slackers, Lauren YoungSmith, aka Lauren YS, studied Visual Art and English at Stanford and says she has had “dynamic bouts in academics, literature and writing, teaching, illustration, and animation”—and she’s still only in her 20s. Arriving on the urban art scene her work, informed by her rich past, is influenced says @1xRun, by “forests and oceans, nasty feelings, things that grow while we are sleeping, ultraviolet colorscapes, little girls who fight monsters, black holes, cybernetic organisms, love, death, and jelly.” In June, 2018 Lauren ventured south from her Bay Area home and added this intriquing piece on E 4th St near Pine Ave for the week-long @PowWowLongBeach festival.  @squid.licker/

FERN’S COCKTAILS, LONG BEACH

Born in Havana, and now based in New Jersey and New York, Travieso credits his love of color to the scarcity of resources in his home country, and his environmental compassion for the vulnerable to Cuba’s persecution of dissenters. Best known for disorienting work with “constant spacial interruption” Travieso’s paintings often include seemingly computer-generated elements as commentary on a natural world “forever at odds with the perpetuity of artificial, manmade technologies.” This colorful composition at @FernsCocktailsLB on Almond Ave at 4th St was created for Pow!Wow!
