Childhood at Hogwarts
Given the underpopulation crisis in the wizarding world, the Ministry and other wizarding institutions focused intently on giving parents all the help and support they possibly could, to encourage more wizards and witches to have as many babies as possible. Professor and Matron Longbottom took advantage of this when their triplets were born, essentially raising them at Hogwarts while they did their jobs. No one complained - they still did their jobs exceedingly well, and the kids were very well-behaved for the most part (all they needed was a threat of “if you don’t behave, you can’t stay at Hogwarts with Mum and Dad,” or at very worst, “Do we have to tell Great-Grandma what you’ve been up to?”, and their behavior would instantly turn angelic- mostly).
While they all got into everything, everywhere, they each had particular favorite spots where they loved to be. Alice loved the greenhouses, where she would sit drawing the plants and listening to her father’s stories, or “helping Daddy” for hours - at first just digging in the dirt or carrying empty pots, but by the time she got to Hogwarts, she was skilled enough that he’d even trust her to help with the Venomous Tentacula, if she was very careful and wore protective gear. Cedric would sit with his mother in the Infirmary, ostensibly reading or playing with toys, but in fact watching very carefully everything she did - she noted after a while that every time she had an emergency, he would run and fetch exactly the materials she needed. She began teaching him basic first aid procedures at the age of six, which proved highly useful for his youngest sister. Because Augusta, from toddler years onward, would sneak off any chance she got to Hagrid’s hut to play with the animals. Hagrid positively doted on her, recognizing a kindred spirit, and loved giving her rides on his shoulders and introducing her to all his favorite creatures. This worried Neville and Hannah a bit, remembering just how scary some of Hagrid’s favorites could be, and knowing just how fearless their youngest child really was. When she ran off to explore the Forbidden Forest one day alone, they - and Hagrid - were terrified, and a search party was quickly organized. Until they found her, curled up and sleeping in a sunny spot, her head pillowed on Buckbeak’s side, with two unicorns and a centaur standing guard.
