012 Austin Ten 4 door Saloon (1932) AGW 241 by Robert Knight Via Flickr: Austin 10/4 4 door Saloon (1932-37) Engine 1125cc S4 SV Production 53695 Registration Number AGW 241 (London) AUSTIN SET www.flickr.com/photos/45676495@N05/sets/72157623759808208... Introduced in May 1932 with a three bearing 21bhp engine on a compact 93 inch wheel base. Four speed gearbox and mechanical pump feed. Originally only available as a Saloon, joined in 1933 by by a Tourer and Cabriolet. Plated hub caps from 1933, syncromesh and X-braced frames and 12 volt electrics from 1934. 1933 saw the saloons joined by an open two-seater or Open Road tourer, a Colwyn cabriolet and a van. A sports model, the 65 miles per hour (105 km/h), 30 brake horsepower (22 kW) Ripley joined the range in 1934. Mechanical upgrades for 1934 included a stronger chassis, synchromesh on the top two gears and 12-volt electrics. The first styling change came in August 1934 with a change to the radiator when the plated surround or cowl was replaced by one painted in body colour and it was given a slight slope. Synchromesh was added to second gear and dual screen wipers, flush-fitting self-cancelling trafficators (worked by the steering) and a foot-operated headlamp dip switch were fitted. The engine controls were simplified by the adoption of automatic ignition, compensated voltage control, and the provision of a "choke" (combined strangler and throttle control). The saloon was given the name Lichfield and got a protruding boot which enclosed the spare wheel. During 1935 the friction dampers were replaced with hydraulic dampers A big change came in December 1936, with the almost streamlined Cambridge saloon and Conway cabriolet. Compared with the preceding cars the passengers and engine were positioned much further forward, the back seat now being rather forward of the back axle. There were six side windows like the Sherborne and the quarter lights were fixed Austins sales slogan of the time - You buy a car, but you invest in an Austin Although the Austin 10 was to continue until 1947 the 1937 model year saw the introduction of new bodies so effectively a second generation car. The Ten was again updated in 1940 as a virtually new model with another new body and a semi-unitary structure. Schomberg's troops crossing the Long Bridge, Belfast in 1689 on the way to the Boyne (main pic).
The Long Bridge was the original bridge to cross the Lagan at Belfast. It was built in 1682 and dismantled in 1841. It is said the bridge was permanently weakened by the crossing of the Williamite army.
‘The Compleat Irish Traveller’, published in 1788, gives the following account of the Long Bridge :–“We proceeded to Belfast, in the county of Antrim, where there is a bridge, under which the river Lagan empties itself into Carrickfergus Bay, and it is one of the most stately in the kingdom, consisting of twenty-one arches, all turned with hewn freestone raised in the hill of Scraba, of which eighteen are on the county of Down side and three in the county of Antrim, the channel dividing the two counties running through the third arch. The whole bridge, and the dead work at each end extended over the marshy grounds, is 2,562 feet long, of which the twenty-one arches take up 840 feet, and the dead work 1,722 feet. The breadth of the arched part is twenty-two feet, and of the rest nineteen. It was built at the joint expense of the two counties and cost about 8,000l. (some say 12,000l.) The foundation of it was laid about the year 1682, and it was not completely finished until the Revolution.”
All that remains of the Long Bridge is the Longbridge Stone, a lump of granite from the bridge which sits at the junction of Castlereagh Street and the Albertbridge Road.
