some of my favorite jamie+trevor moments from their first season on the Flyers together | 25-26 Season
OKAY. SO.
A) We're talking about weaving looms, not loom knitting. Clarification of terms: weft is the horizontal yarn that you weave over and under the warp threads. Warp is both a noun, the vertical threads that the loom holds so the weft can be woven through it, and a verb, the process of putting the warp threads on the loom. "Two harness weave" is a fast way of making a plain weave that just goes up and down one thread at a time.
B) MANY different kinds of looms are basically just carefully selected sticks, combined with the know-how of using them to make fabric. Go on etsy and look up backstrap looms, because they're just just seven sticks. So, we are not going to deduct points from the Kliot loom just because it's only a bunch of sticks. We have plenty of other stuff to discredit the Kliot loom for. We don't need to throw in things that are arguably fine.
Part 1) You can buy the Lacis Kliot loom at places that do not normally sell weaving supplies, but you cannot buy it from places that do sell weaving supplies.
Is it on Overstock.com? Yes. Is it on OrientalTrading.com? Yes. Is it the only weaving loom on Joann.com? Yes. Can you get it on The Woolery? No. Can you get it on Paradise Fibers? No.
This loom is intentionally marketed at people who do not know how to weave, and is not available from places where the shoppers do know how to weave. We need to remember this, because it's an indication that Lacis believes that their product should require no weaving knowledge to use. The manufacturer does have a lot to do with where the product is sold, so we can say this is specifically a Lacis decision.
Part 2) Their Amazon reviews used to be faked and they still seem to be manipulated.
The way they did that was to list five items on one listing, under the claim that they were different colors of the same item. On Amazon, if you're selling bottles of paint, it's normal to have all the bottles of paint from one brand on one listing, and then allow people to select a color. All those different bottles of paint then get reviewed as a single product.
What Lacis used to have was this loom on the same listing as several stamp pads that they distributed but did not manufacture. The pads were, I believe, made by Clover, and were a quality product. The other item that was available on this listing was the loom. This meant that, when someone bought the brown stamp pad and gave it 5/5 stars, that 5/5 rating would also apply to the Kliot loom. This is blatantly against Amazon's listing rules, BTW. If you looked at those reviews, the percentage of 1- and 2- star reviews that were about the loom and not the stamp pads was much higher than the positive reviews.
I think there is STILL some manipulation going on in their listings, because when you start looking at the ratings, almost 100% of negative reviews left text comments, and about 50% of positive reviews rated without leaving a comment. I don't have any proof on that, but it's my suspicion.
I'm not saying that these are fake reviews but I'm going to say that there's absolutely nothing indicating that any of these people have actually used the product.
Part 3) Even the positive Amazon reviews say negative things about this product.
Check out the positive reviews. You will see some major trends showing up. Many positive reviews still say it was not for beginners, that it was missing pieces, that it was difficult to set up, or that the instructions were terrible.
A quick reminder that Lacis sells this loom on sites that do not sell other weaving supplies. Lacis believes that people who do not know how to weave should buy their product to learn how to weave on it. "Not for beginners" is a negative as it works against their selling scheme.
Part 4) Many of the reviews are made by people who have never completed a project on this loom.
I have combed the entire internet (note: not actually the entire internet) looking for any projects completed on this loom, that were following the instructions. I've completed a "project" on it by aggressively ignoring the instructions and the creative usage of blue painter's tape.
Most reviews complain about difficulty warping the loom, and I can't blame them for that, but warping any loom except a basic frame loom is a bitch. My real loom lets me warp it like this, which I find easier, but it's still a huge pain in the ass to set up. This project used size 1 thread, so doing the entire warp took me a couple of hours. We're not going to deduct points for the fact that it needs to be warped and warping can be annoying.
However, in my experience with the Lacis Kliot loom, the actual weaving steps are also much more difficult than you'd experience on other kinds of looms, and no one is talking about that part.
Part 5) They sell it as being good for more things than just tapestry.
So, this is sold as a tapestry loom, and tapestry weaving is different from 2-harness weaving or generally weaving cloth. This video shows exactly how much stress tapestry weaving puts on the warp and the loom. All things considered, it's not a lot of stress, especially when compared to weaving on a backstrap loom where you slam the warp into place with a thing that's literally called a machete.
However, in their instructions, on their box, and on the single video on the internet they have about how to set it up, they say that it's also capable of plainweaves and "other 2-harness weaves". Reminder that they market this to people new to weaving, who are going to read that it can do plainweaves and buy it for that, because they don't know how to tell if a loom can do that just by looking at it.
I personally was not able at all to do a good plain weave on this when following their instructions, due to shifting grain. When I complained about this, I got, "Well, what do you expect, it's a tapestry loom." I'd been sold a loom that should do a plain weave. I've actually woven pretty good plain weave on other tapestry looms. But again, they advertised it as being for a use that it does not deliver, and then its defenders blame people who could not use it for that purpose by claiming that it never was for that purpose.
Part 6) It doesn't actually come with everything you need.
I had to drop another $30 on the wooden pieces that you need to weave and that it didn't come with. This does put a big damper on the affordability price. It's not unusual for a loom to require you to DIY all the parts that are made out of string--and a lot of parts can be made out of string--but generally they do come with all the wooden parts. Again, I want to reiterate that this loom is sold primarily on sites that do not sell other weaving supplies. Where are we getting our damn stick shuttles from, Lacis?
It's also worth mentioning that as part of the set up process, you need to tie about 70 little string loops. That's not outrageous in terms of looms but a lot of quality tapestry looms come with pre-done texolve heddles so that you don't need to do that.
Part 7) The instructions mention many techniques for which there is no way whatsoever for you to expand your knowledge and learn what they mean.
"Longer warps are possible using advanced techniques," so tell me what those are, my man!!! You can't get credit for your loom being capable of something when there's no explanation for how to do that technique. I mean, even if it was only available in a separate purchase of a tutorial, at least the information would exist. Remember that a loom without instructions is 9 sticks and some string. If you're referencing that it's capable of something, you should have a resource to explain how to do that. This is true with a lot of things but it's especially true with looms.
In addition, the method of warping the loom that they show cannot make a warp wide enough to fit the whole weaving width of the loom. To make a full width, you have to do multiple passes on the warping board, and they most certainly do not tell you how to do that.
Part 8) There are some major problems with the functions of this as a loom.
So here's an important thing: the warp thread is under constant tension. It's not always a lot of tension, but it needs to not be flopping around.
In addition, the warp has to support the weft yarn and hold it stable. If the weft yarn is not stable, it will make a twisted grain, which is bad. The weft has to be packed down so that it all sits together, which puts stress onto the warp threads. They must be held stably so that the warp threads can be tamped down.
Conveniently, your loom is a frame of wood, so the warp is held steady by the bars of the loom and it doesn't shift!
Oh wait.
That's what this would do if it made sense.
So, one of the things that many looms do is that they're able to hold warp threads that are longer than the loom itself. That's why my picture of me warping the loom up there has me measuring out thread that's 6x the length of my actual loom. That's where many tapestry looms are lacking; with a simple frame loom, you're limited to the size of the frame. If you can move the warp, because it's longer than the loom, you can keep the weaving area closer to your body and you don't need to reach your arms out uncomfortably.
The Kliot loom is set up in such a way that it can weave at almost twice the actual length of the frame. Cool, right? Well, bad news, the method that they have to do this fucking sucks.
The warp on this is called a continuous warp, which is how a lot of tapestries are woven. The thread is looped back and forth between two sticks in a figure eight pattern.
Here's a side view of the loom. The two blue sticks are then wrapped around the red frame of the loom, with the pink warp thread on them. To put tension on the warp and hold it in place, a piece of string is then used to tie the two sticks together (not pictured).
This has one huge, major flaw: there is absolutely nothing forcing those sticks to stay perpendicular to the sides of the frame. Nothing whatsoever. If you put pressure on the warp on one side, they will shift down onto that side, twisting the grain on your piece. If you're lucky, the lashing won't get distorted and fall off and destroy your entire piece, but it is a possibility with this set up. Also, a shorter warp will require more distance between the two sticks, which can make the problem worse.
Now, for a two-harness weave, this is absolutely useless. With a two-harness weave, you beat the entire warp down in one go, which stresses the entire warp at the same time, making it incredibly likely to shift. However, we're going to play the but it's a tapestry loom it says tapestry on the box it's only for tapestry game for a hot second. You cannot actually beat this down like a tapestry, with a tapestry beater or a tapestry bobbin or a tapestry needle or anything without shifting the warp!! The only way to make this work is to grab the bars from underneath when you beat, which requires you to have three or more hands.
If you look up the rare tapestry loom that is built for longer warp than the frame, you'll notice that the bars holding the warp have a way of being fixed to the frame while you weave. Example.
There is also no way of keeping the warp properly spaced. Most looms have a beater of some kind to keep the warp from all sliding together. Most tapestry looms don't have an attached beater and use little springs or notches in the wood to keep the warp from attracting itself to itself. The little thread chain that Lacis recommends doesn't actually work, and you can't remove it like they say in the instructions. Instead, you have to be constantly re-tying it to the frame, or else your warp will become one with itself. Very frustrating.
The project that I "completed" on this loom I did by taping the warp rod directly to the top bar and then winding it around the bar for tension.
Part 9) Why is it so over-designed?
When you look at other tapestry looms, you're going to notice that this thing has a bunch of parts that normal tapestry weavers don't use. Their funky little heddle set up in the middle works okay, but there's not actually a good reason to use two heddle rods for something like this. The easiest way is to accomplish a two-harness setup is with one rod like this and then just get a fucking stick. Like get yourself a 18"x1" ruler and you just stick it in the back and then turn it on its side. Most tapestry looms don't even do that, because you're not putting thread all the way through the tapestry and it's just as easy to go one thread at a time when you're doing precision work.
The reason why I think it's so over-designed is because they want it to look like a loom you weave cloth with, not just a tapestry loom. Again, no proof there, but I think that's why.
Part 10) Why aren't there reviews by people who have finished projects??
The answer is because this thing is really unpleasant to use and doesn't make good-looking projects. I initially assumed that it was some kind of conspiracy there, but it's just not enjoyable to set up.
But I want to get into weaving.
Okay, let's look at options.
Okay, so for starters, since we've played the "it's a tapestry loom, not a cloth loom!! don't judge it on the other stuff they say it can dooo, it says TA-PES-TRY" game, let's talk about if you want to get into tapestry weaving.
The good news is you can make a basic tapestry loom very easily and cheaply. Go to a thrift store and get yourself a sturdy wooden picture frame, and then get a pack of finishing nails from your hardware store. Hammer them into the frame evenly, and wind some string between them across the front of the loom. Bam, you have a loom. This probably isn't going to be your tapestry loom for the rest of your life, but most people find out if they're a tapestry weaving fan about 1.5" into their first tapestry. If you like making tapestries in this loom, you can check out better looms. Look for ones where the positive reviewers don't say a lot of negative things about it and where people have actually completed projects on the loom.
If you want to get into basic fabric weaving, I'm a fan of rigid heddle looms. They're easy to warp, versatile, and they work pretty fast. Experimenting with different yarn combinations is one of my favorite things about rigid heddle weaving, since both the warp and weft show. The Harrisville Easy Weaver and the Ashford 10" SampleIt loom are both under $200. I know the Kliot says it can weave up to 24" but that's with their magical know-how of making the warp not slide together. In my not-small experimentation period, that's not possible.
You can also try some more inexpensive techniques, like pin looms or peg looms. Blankets on a pin loom are super fun, because you weave little squares and piece them together. This makes it really portable and allows you to use multiple cool kinds of yarn. Peg looms are really good at weaving big chunks of fabric, and you can use various yarns or non-yarns like sliver or plastic.
There's a lot of ways to get into weaving without buying the Kliot loom. In fact, I'm going to argue that there's lots of ways to get into weaving despite buying the Kliot loom. Anyhow, that's the loom story, why a product that's so blatantly bad keeps selling.

Berserk and Amon
Since :Re began (and even earlier, really), it feels like Ishida is making intentional references to the manga “Berserk” within Amon’s story arc. The most obvious evidence of all actually begins with Seidou...
Now, this gross meat pile isn’t only a meat pile. It looks really similar to the Behelit from Berserk.
Though Ishida could’ve simply been going for a horror element here, the meat that Amon was originally given to eat had no faces. It was just a pile of human meat that was successfully presented as horrifying without further visual impact. Furthermore, the Crimson Behelit offers the chance for one of Berserk’s main characters to leave his humanity behind in exchange for his flesh, blood, and family...and Seidou changed after consuming the meat he was given (implied to be the meat of his family members). The Behelit is active when its eyes are open, too, so it seems like this reference was probably intentional. Of course, just one reference isn’t enough to build a theory off of. Fortunately, there are more! The gross meat pile makes its return in the latest chapter...
Though it no longer has the characteristic egg-shape. It is however, something that haunts Amon. It also looks like something that haunts Guts, a character with a lot of eery similarities to Amon.
The disgusting demon baby that follows Guts and Caska around is representative of his trauma, his guilt, and his fears. It isn’t harmful by itself and, at times, is actually helpful. This is well in-line with what human meat represents to Amon. The demon baby is eventually consumed by a Behelit and is used to “change the world”, as per the wish of an (explicitly reference to be) empty man. Considering the context this image was brought up in, and keeping in mind Amon’s desire to change the world, it seems that this reference is intentional. Still, more evidence is required before people can really start drawing parallels between Guts’ arc in Berserk and Amon’s in Tokyo Ghoul. Luckily for me, people have been speculating about their similarities for quite some time and so panels are easy to find.
1. Both characters wield a frankly ridiculously huge weapon that they inherited from a friend. The weapon requires a massive amount of strength to use and is unique to them.
2. They both lost an arm.
3. The Arata armour looks almost exactly like Guts’ armour. Both sets of armour are taxing for their user to operate, but were necessary to fight enemies much stronger than themselves.
4. They both wind up having the aesthetic of a “Dark Knight”. As a “knight”, they wind up saving young girls who later return the favour and help bring them down from a monstrous take-over by their armour without killing them.
(Amon rescues Saiko in full armour, ffs) 5. Suffered a massive betrayal at the hands of a father figure. Killed many people for said father-figure (as children!!!!) and developed an obsession with perpetuating this cycle. Also: both orphans.
6. A cross to bear ie. Amon’s cross and Guts’ mark (both on their necks, both meant to never let them escape from their past, both with massive religious connotations)
7. Their whole look. The entire thing. Half-ghoul Amon looks so much like Guts.
There’s also the “near constant state of hatred towards a world they perceive as wrong” thing and the “fail to learn from their mistakes” thing and the “is basically no longer human” thing alongside the “awkward beautiful man who doesn’t know how to deal with women” thing. TLDR: Guts and Amon share a lot of characteristics and this latest chapter brought it up again so I couldn’t help but make a compilation post.
