I watch Outlander and I enjoy it. The rape scenes are disturbing, of course but I'm not sure Randall is the representation of a evil gay - and maybe that's why it didn't disturb me that much. Randall is a rapist and he needs to possess James because he refuses to be broken by him, so he's a monster but not a gay monster, just a very very very disturbed and evil mind. [1/2]

He needs to break both Claire and James, the representation of what he'll never be able to have: a strong bound, and love. The other rape scene, the one which happens in France...that made me angry too. It was totally useless and it could easily be avoided. In that case, the raped girl was just an excuse to show the noble spirit of the young man willing to marry her despite her lost virtue. That scene was on my advice much worse than the first one.

Oh, and let me add just one more thing: I can't help being in love with both Claire and James, so please don't blame me if I keep watching, hoping the writers will make progress <3

Fair enough. It seems like I’ve either misremembered that fact about Randall, or I didn’t stick around long enough to realise he’s just an equal opportunities rapist. I didn’t see any of the stuff in France, but that does sound very unnecessary and grim. I suppose largely my issue with the show is the amount of rape in general. It seems to take the place of actual plot or compelling character motivation in a lot of instances, and it feels like a really unpleasant relic of so many of those 20th century bodice-ripper type novels. It’s not titillating or exciting, and it is possible to write historical fiction without it. If it was just that one instance of it then that would be one thing, but it’s such an ever-present threat in the story that it’s exhausting.

But I very much understand loving a thing and hoping the writers will do right by you, so I genuinely hope they do make progress and you continue to enjoy it. :)

Aww, thank you! Here goes:

1. My eyebrows. They’ve got a nice shape and I can lift one without doing the other which is a good talent to have.

2. My hair color. It’s dark brown but I get reddish highlights in it if I’m out in the sun enough and I like those.

3. My nice organized brain. It’s kind of like a library up there - one that’s got a great deal of esoteric knowledge stored away that sometimes takes a while to dust off, sure, but it’s all there in fairly neat order.

4. My nose, which is exactly like my grandmother’s. 

5. The fact that I made it through years of vicious bullying and problems at home and came out the other side determined to be kind to people if possible. What I put up with should, by all rights, have made me hate the world and instead I really try to see where people are coming from and cut them a little slack.
