DIY Rapunzel’s journal 2.0: by hero central:

Afternoon folks, Alex here with a project update on the DIY Rapunzel journal from Tangled the series, using case and long stitch binding. After looking closely at the book from the series, it seems the book seemed more of a square than an A5 scaled rectangle. The measurements I took for this developed book were 19cm X 14.5cm, and cut down the signatures accordingly, with a craft knife.  Another change was the loss of the line stitches at the end of the crosses as my past versions showed strength and the piece holding together well, plus looking at the reference image above from videos I’ve watched on Youtube I looked at the distance between the crosses and incorporated this when creating the binding holes in the text block. My personal touch was using a corner punch on the cover and pages so that they would harmonise together when closed. 

Now in your personal opinion Tangled fans which looks better the first two versions or this 2.0 version? 

Overall this shows that I am close to authenticity of the book and my next challenge will be the ring bound journal from Kingdom hearts and possibly the book of prophecies soon after, so stay tuned.

In addition I shall update my comic projects soon as I have comic con to prepare for and animation practice for future use and understanding so thank you for your patience.

This is my crowning glory from this semester- my final project! My art history teacher is an archaeologist and joked about me making her a field journal after seeing some of my books, so I discussed it with my bookmaking teacher and it worked out well! She absolutely adored it, and I worked really hard on it - I’m just really happy she liked it so much. Off it goes to the middle east for excavations! (in-progress shots here)

This 9x5 field journal features... 

roughly 50 sheets of slightly tinted handmade paper with flowers pressed and dried into the pages (more pages here and here)

letterpress printing of my teacher’s favourite quote and a little note at the back

a leather bookmark and leather clasp that works with a pen (or dowell, as it was presented)

bookcloth pockets (one had a sewn design)

first attempt at longstitch binding! made this using kinda cheap pleather since I didn’t want to use up good leather on a first try but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out all things considered

Long Stitch binding try out: by Hero Central:

Heres my first attempt at long stitch binding which I learned by watching tutorials done by Sea Lemon. This was a rather difficult technique, as I found it difficult to create the loop in applying the first signature. However like a mountain I overcame this obstacle and stitched the other signatures into place. I created a hanging off area to fold across the front cover which was inspired by Rapunzel’s Journal from Tangled Before ever after (good film by the way) and I used parchment paper for the signatures. Looking back I could see that I had to tie a knot in the double threaded thread using both threads so it may make it less difficult for my next version.The threads are a bit loose and will need to be corrected in later versions.
