The first exhibition of American pop-artist Roy Lichtenstein opened on 10 February 1962.
The exhibition opened at Leo Castelli gallery in New York and featured one of Lichtenstein’s most famous works Look Mickey. The painting was created in a period of Lichtenstein’s career that lasted from 1960 to 1965. In these years Lichtenstein moved away from his abstract painting and began producing works that featured imagery and characters from popular culture.
Look Mickey was the first of Lichtenstein’s works to comprise several of the attributes for which he was most famous, including Ben-Day dots, speech marks and imagery from comics. These would remain key aspects of Lichtenstein’s pop-art and can be seen in other famous works, such as Whaam! and Drowning Girl.
The New York exhibition was the beginning of Lichtenstein’s rise to fame. His humorous appropriations of comic strip and cartoon imagery proved very popular and in 1963 Lichtenstein became the first American artist to exhibit at Tate, London.
Look Mickey is now housed in the Washington National Art Gallery and his highly valued for its impact within the Pop-Art movement as well as within the trajectory of modern art more generally.

Roy Liechtenstein: Quotes & Art back2back
It's pop time! Because, 90 years ago this day, Roy Liechtenstein was born.
Pop art. Or the first memes. Or just female hysteria on comic strips.
Words and images by Roy:
I like to pretend that my art has nothing to do with me.
In America, the biggest is the best.
I don't have much anxieties. I wish I did. I'd be much more interesting.
I think that most people think painters are kind of ridiculous, you know?
Long live pop art! Long live Roy!
