Before he knew it, Nekhtou had stopped in front of a door. Jude came to an unsure stop behind him. Nekhtou knocked twice and stepped back.
“Prince Kul? Your father has found a suitable healer.”
Silence. The door creaked open. A boy about Jude’s age stood on the other side, a scowl on his face. Dark curls piled on top of his head. A wide golden necklace lay draped above his bare chest. Unlike his father, the prince seemed to slouch forward a bit. His head snapped in Jude’s direction, though the boy’s gray eyes seemed to look through Jude rather than at him. Kul sighed as though this visit was a great burden on him.
“Come on in. Let’s get this over with.”
Jude followed Kul inside the room, and the great wooden door slammed shut behind him. Jude jumped at the sound. The other boy just kept walking, unperturbed by the sudden noise. Once the shock wore off, Jude noticed a strange clicking sound that seemed to follow the prince wherever he went. He plopped onto a bed- an actual bed! -and seemed to stare Jude down.
“So,” he drawled. “You’re here to make me see.”
“Yeah. I guess so. I mean, that’s the idea.”
Kul leaned forward and propped his chin up on his hand. He looked, for all intents and purposes, bored out of his mind. Not at all the way Jude expected a blind man to react to the prospect of a cure.
“Uh-huh. So what are you gonna do? Put some herbal crap on my eyes and have me breathe deeply for a half hour? Or are you one of those idiots who think evil spirits have entered my body and can be cleansed through the magical powers of incense?” Kul waggled his fingers theatrically at him, cracking a small smile. “Don't tell me. You have a magic spell, complete with an ancient chant.”
“No. I mean, I don’t do any of that. It’s not really- I mean I-” Jude cleared his throat. “Well, usually I just put my hands on whatever needs healing and then it gets fixed.” he said quickly.
Kul raised an eyebrow.
“Wow.” he scoffed. “No offense, but my dad must really be desperate if you managed to get past him. You don’t even have a good sales spiel.”
Jude frowned.
“It works.” he said firmly.
“Sure it does.” Kul said. “Listen, I don’t really care whether you’re the real deal or not. Personally, I think you’re a charlatan looking to use me to get to my dad's money. Point is, even if you could change my eyes, I wouldn’t let you anywhere near them. I like the way I am. So just walk out of here and tell my dad you tried your best, but it can’t be done.”
Confusion washed over him. Kul didn’t want to be healed? Jude fiddled with his hands for a moment.
“I would do that,” he said slowly. “Except, the Pharaoh said if I don't heal you, he'll kill me.” Jude paused. “Well, he said I had to try, at least.”
“So? Tell him you tried,” Kul waved him away, “Go home. We can both move on with our lives.”
Relief flooded his senses.
“Okay. Um… thank you.” Jude said, as he backed out of the room.
