Behold my idle hands, boy
Hey can I just point people to a very cool very easy fiber art featuring
Barely any special equipment! (Unless you want to like. Have a bit more stability)
cool patterns, including lettering!!
flexible weaving style!
historical context!! Nuns did this! And iron age people! You can see people doing this in illustrations!
can make really quite delicate work on just your fingers
it’s finger loop braiding, it’s cool
this is a website I learned from but there’s other ones out there
A no-equipment technique for braiding cords and bands
I made my lanyard for my keys using this.
[Image reads: “Want a bracelet or necklace? Custom braids now 25% OFF at etsy.com/shop/finchbraids . Enter coupon code CUSTOM25 at checkout!”]
I’m bored and feel like braiding, so in honor of my finally adding custom options to etsy, here’s a 25% off deal! I’d prefer you use colors I already have, or it might take me a while to get to your order... The second image are all the colors I’ve currently got. If something looks low, I probably have enough for one loop in a bracelet, but not enough for a necklace.
This deal is only on for a week (until next Saturday) so act quick!

Dear Everybody: I am taking loop braid commissions! (edited 4/19/15)
Hi, my name's Finch and I'm a trans/nonbinary, disabled college student living in Oregon!
The short story is:
I'm from Indiana, but came to Oregon for college because I needed a more trans-friendly atmosphere and to be away from my abusive parents.
I've really enjoyed the time I've been here. I've made some great friends, finally decided to switch my major to something I actually enjoy, and I really want to get my bachelor's degree at least!
BUT, unfortunately, going to college, especially as an out-of-state student, is really fucking expensive! Neither I nor my parents have a lot of money to continue my education for long. However, as time has proven, every little bit counts...
*I'm looking for work, and I'll be moving out of dorms starting this summer to reduce costs (university housing is outrageously expensive), but dealing with chronic pain and brainweirdness is hard, and makes it harder to look for jobs, as well as limiting the amount of work I can do...
So I really need all the help I can get!
*Edit 4/19/15: i have a 10 hour/week minimum wage job now, which is something but not..so much . i’m still looking for other work but commissions and/or donations really do help!
The good news is that I can loop braid! It's really fun and inexpensive, and braids are great for everybody in one way or another!
Braid Types:
Box-shaped braids. As the name implies, these are boxy, or some people call them round. They do not rest flat against your skin.
Flat braids. These braids are flat, and really good for chokers or bracelets.
Braids will include loop-knot closure over 6 inches or if specified! I can also add one or more decorative hole to any braid if specified.
All braids are made of embroidery floss, which is made of 100% cotton unless I specify otherwise. Funkier colors (like neons or especially shiny colors) might be synthetic.
Braids can be made with 3, 5, 7 or 9 loops, which will affect the thickness (on box-shaped braids) or width (on flat braids) of your braid! Each loop of can be a different color, or you can repeat colors.
In the examples:
I think the little blue braid (second from top) is 3 loops.
The flat red braid and the box-shaped black, yellow and green bracelet are 5 loops.
The flat green braid, the little green and orange braid, and the pastel braid are 7 loops.
All custom braids will be limp and straight, the twisty braids in the example photos are that way because I have had them tied around things for a very long time. I cannot guarantee what pattern your colors will be in.
To Order:
Send a message to this blog (finchbraids) saying what you want to order and what colors you want it in. PREMADE braids are also available at my etsy! For customs, after the braid is done (time depends on how many orders and how many spoons / how much energy I have as well as complexity of the order), I will message you. Be prepared to give me your mailing address and to pay to my paypal, [email protected]. Currently I am only planning on shipping to the US (free!) but I will be looking into international shipping!
Please consider buying braids from me, or donating if you don't want a braid, and please boost!
Feel free to message me with any questions!
