Naps Help
Feeling better now. Afternoon nap and a good night’s sleep.
Not sore. No longer spent.
Post ride report is basically a confirmation of what I said yesterday.
I got a cute pin from the Randonneurs. Those guys try and they did a really good organizational job. Volunteers are golden. Water, bananas, cookies and really yummy banana bread. CARB up dudes.
This may seem confusing to people outside Cycling, but long efforts require a constant supply of fuel. In very general terms some of your muscles burn fat and some burn sugar. You need to use both. Insufficient sugar in the form of glycogen causes an unpleasant condition called hypoglycemia known as a bonk. You get wobbly. So you keep your fuel supply up.
One hour in a gym does not require fuel as you carry roughly an hours supply of glycogen in your body for heavy efforts. So long heavy efforts are different.
A poetic version of this is “you burn fat in a flame of sugar”. (not mine)
I weighed myself this morning. I weighed myself yesterday morning at the same time. I am about two pounds or 1kg lighter. Sudden loss of weight usually is from dehydration as sudden gains are from over hydration. I am probably still recovering. The ride was not long enough to burn that much.
So I ride bikes not to experience shitty weather and long hard events. I ride bikes to be fit enough to ride in whatever conditions and distances I choose. I can do this because I do it. Loopy logic, but I like loopy logic.
More logic from my friend
I have a sleep disorder: ideopathic hypersomnia, which is a fancy way of say I'm excessively tired without an identifiable cause. That diagnosis in itself is a problem (and I have actually had 24 hour sleep tests to confirm the diagnosis), because you get people saying: "ha ha, I must have that, I'm tired" (when they are tired because they haven't gotten enough sleep, are running around after their kids all day etc etc).
But that's a post for another day... anyway, friend (who has recently lost a lot of weight, which for him is great, because he was obese and suffering from pre-diabetes) told me I should take duromine (a weight loss drug) because it keeps you awake (that is a fairly common side effect). It has a different name in the US, phentermine? (something like that).
Another side effect: can lead to heart problems because your heart rate increases.
I actually said, I wish I could get it but no doctor will prescribe it to me. Now, the reason I want it is to lose weight, but as my BMI is 22, no doctor in their right mind would give it to me. He seemed shocked at this (the idea that a doctor wouldn't prescribe it, he often says I look great and shouldn't worry about my weight), (seriously - are there doctors out there who just write prescriptions for whatever you ask for?)
But let's recap: I don't need to lose weight (obviously I think I do), I already have heart problems (which this friend knows about), but I should go on a drug that has the potential to make my heart problems worse because I may get a benefit out of a potential side effect ??? Seriously???
