Depression Summers

I always liked summer

except

when I sat in the hot sun and shucked green peas

or cut string beans

instead of going swimming; and

except when we had to walk seven long hot blocks

to swim in a free indoor pool for a half hour

and then get hot all over again walking back

the long hill

but on the hill it was nice on hot summer nights

to be ten degrees cooler than the hot city

and

it was nice to see the city lights all the way

from

St. Helens to Mount Hood and then some

 it wasn't bad now that I think of it
