The youngest of Odin and Frigga’s children had finally come of age. Laerke was no longer a girl, yet not quite refined enough to be a woman. She was a lady though, and the entire whole realm showed up the night before to begin the celebrations. It had been a wild time. The princess’s enthusiasm and vivaciousness was infectious to all who encountered her.
The morning of the second day carried a vastly different atmosphere.
One of Laerke’s trusted ladies was tasked with finding some form, any form, of assistance. “She is in a frightful mood,” Selby confessed in a near whisper. It wasn’t treasonous to speak of the princess to her brothers, but it felt like a betrayal all the same. Never would she speak of her princess’s secrets, unless no other options remained. Going to Loki was indeed a last resort.
“I thought at first it was just an effect from last night’s... libations. But she refuses to allow us to dress her, refuses her hair. When she speaks it is short and sharp. Not cruel, we know she would never be cruel and yet it feels as though it would be all too easy for her to be. I’ve never seen her eyes so dark, never seen her so still. I am worried for her, my prince. This is different from any fit or depression she’s had while I’ve been with her.”
Loki finds her just as Selby described: sitting at her desk, staring at a stack of blank paper, still in her robe. His intrusion into her room elicits no reaction. Even as he takes a seat beside her Laerke doesn’t move. There’s no fight in her as Loki’s steady fingers turn her head to face him. Oh, but there is fire in those eyes; too hot and angry to ever be mistaken for the cool stillness of Gull.
“I don’t need whatever hangover cure you’ve brought,” she finally decides to spit out.
