Labour Challenges Tory Frontbencher Over Legal Role for Sanctioned Oligarch
Labour has questioned the position of Conservative shadow attorney general Lord Wolfson after it emerged he is acting as a lawyer for sanctioned Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Justice Minister Jake Richards said it was inappropriate for Lord Wolfson to remain on the Conservative frontbench while representing Mr Abramovich in a legal dispute with the Jersey government, warning that the dual roles could create a conflict of interest.
Lord Wolfson is part of the legal team involved in proceedings linked to Mr Abramovich, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club, whose assets were frozen after he was sanctioned by the UK in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Courts in Jersey have frozen more than £5.3bn connected to the oligarch while authorities investigate the origin of the funds.
The case has become closely linked to the delayed release of £2.5bn generated from the sale of Chelsea FC. The UK government wants the money directed towards victims of the war in Ukraine, but the funds remain frozen amid legal and political disagreements. Mr Abramovich has previously said the money should support “all victims of the war”, including Russians.
In a letter to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Richards argued that Lord Wolfson’s involvement in the Jersey case raised questions about his role in shaping Conservative policy on the issue. He said that while the legal profession’s “cab rank rule” requires barristers to accept cases within their expertise, it does not override the responsibility of politicians to avoid conflicts of interest.
Richards said Lord Wolfson’s position as a paid representative of Mr Abramovich could undermine his ability to advise the party on matters directly connected to the frozen funds.
The Conservative Party rejected the criticism, describing it as politically motivated. A party spokesperson said Lord Wolfson was instructed only on ongoing legal proceedings in Jersey and not specifically on the Chelsea FC sale. They added that barristers represent clients rather than endorsing their actions.
The Conservatives also accused Labour of inconsistency, noting that the current Attorney General previously represented controversial clients before entering government. The party reiterated its support for Ukraine and dismissed claims that Lord Wolfson’s legal work weakened that stance.
The dispute comes as pressure grows to resolve the impasse over the Chelsea sale proceeds. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called on Mr Abramovich to allow the funds to be released or face potential legal action, as the money remains frozen in a UK bank under sanctions rules.
Lord Wolfson, chief executive of clothing firm Next, said he still hoped a deal could be done before 31 October. But he said the government's increased focus on contingency planning meant the UK was close to being well prepared.
