i was talking to my friend yesterday about joss whedon and he was like “he never killed off anyone i loved in btvs" and i was like “you obviously have not seen angel" (but i was also thinking wtf did you not love tara or anya what is wrong with you)
it's funny bc i was talking to bff about joyce and contrasting the body with ahitw and like
if you're going to write a lengthy, protracted death like fred's, it is most important to give us a narrative reason for it other than some kind of overextended manipulation of our emotions. If you're going to make one of your leads suffer like that, there has to be some character development! something that pushes the character's arc forward one last time! some final purpose or insight on the character that the audience hasn't seen before!
joyce's death wasn't like that- joyce's death was specifically about Death, about the people in her life she'd affected. and it was done with dignity. she died, and only then did was it natural and respectful for it to become a story about her family and friends. it didn't make her suffer for no discernible purpose, and the only reason she had a love interest in the previous episode was to hammer home that idea of life doesn't go on- not for her.
meanwhile, fred's death is a protracted exercise of her being an object, a thing for all the dudes around her to mourn and ~nobly seek vengeance~ for. while she's still alive. while she's lying there, and the narrative barely lets her pay lip service to the idea that she isn't a damsel in distress while shifting focus to the guys anyway, while making it a story about the heroes going off to rescue the damsel. she's princess peach, she's locked in a tower crying impotence while they're going on quests. she's reduced to a person she never was, a helpless maiden instead of the fierce survivor we've known, and it's senseless. it's purposeless. and not because death is senseless and purposeless, but because the story doesn't allow for her to die as a Person, as the person she's been until then. she's just the object.
(and it is SO GROSS that they EXPLICITLY made fresley happen then only so wes's manpain would be worse WHAT EVEN)

are his btvs opinions good i know you said he was saying some gross things before
lmao I still argue with him about everything but it's not his fault he doesn't know how to not act like an idiot. In general, he's good. I can put some sense into him. He's not so much the type to have deep insightful opinions about tv anyway, but it made him reflect on some things eventually!!
