i went to an art show my dad was in and it was quite boring..... but the story below is completely true
i am not a religious person by any means (my parents are agnostic or pagan and never raised me that way) , but i do believe my dad’s art has a rich spiritual connection and origin story
my irish-catholic grandmother dorothy, when she was pregnant with my father, traveled to the famous loretto chapel in santa fe, new mexico, and prayed to saint joseph that her unborn son be both protected and inundated with an eye for beauty because she was an artist as well, and interestingly enough, he grew to become a great woodworker — good enough to have built a regular old wooden stall for a school that subsequently burnt down, melted steel beams and all, without it burning at all
now, a lot of his woodwork revolves around abstract winged spirits, and the longer you look at them the more you can see, so my sister thinks he’s connected to angels or something otherworldly which is a compelling narrative
