With a happy, bone-deep sigh, Sebastian drops his head to Chris’s shoulder as they sway around the living room with slow steps. Outside, sheets of rain beat heavy against the window panes, but they barely hear the storm. Inside, they’re cocooned by Etta James’s smooth, rich voice as it swirls out of the speakers to dance around them.

Sebastian squeezes Chris’s hand and rubs over his thumb as he peers down the sliver of space between their bodies. Their slippered feet move slow, toes knocking together every now and again; barely stepping, barely shuffling. Just rocking together in front of the couch, both enjoying the weight of the other in their arms.

Chris’s lips brush lightly against his cheek in a hint of a kiss, his breath ghosting over Sebastian’s skin. He intends to turn his head and capture Chris’s mouth with a kiss of his own, but then Chris is pulling him in tight, closing the gap between their chests as he tightens his hand on Sebastian’s back.

Through their shirts, he can feel the vibrations of Chris humming along to the song.

“I love you,” Sebastian whispers; to Chris, to his life, to what they’ve built together. “Love you so much.”

Chris rests their foreheads together, closing his eyes as he smiles and hums and seems to bask in Sebastian’s words. When he speaks, Sebastian feels it in warmth against his lips. “To the moon and back, sweetheart.”

The song continues on.

Sebastian thinks this might be it. The thing everyone endeavors to have and insists is always just out of reach. The ‘finally’ people covet if they’re lucky enough to find it; a home with someone else, in someone else. And if this is it, if this feeling of wholeness and safety is that ‘finally’ for him and Chris, Sebastian never wants anything else.
