My headcanons on the history of House Stark from the end of F&B to present day (Part 1 of 2)

Cregan Stark and Alysanne Blackwood had 4 daughters: Sarra in 138 AC, Alys in 140 AC, Raya in 141 AC, and Myriah in 143 AC; the four girls would later go on to marry into the mountain clans;

In 144 AC, Rickon Stark married Jeyne Manderly, the youngest daughter of Lord Torrhen Manderly, when he was 16 and she was 19;

In 145 AC, Rickon and Jeyne's first child, a girl named Sansa, was born; that same year, Alysanne Blackwood died at the age of 32, leaving Cregan devastated;

In 147 AC, having had only one male heir, Cregan decided to remarry to secure the bloodline; his chosen bride was Lynara Stark, a distant cousin. They married later that year, when Cregan was 39 and Lynara was 17;

Cregan and Lynara's marriage was loveless, but fruitful; they had five children: Jonnel in 148 AC, Edric in 150 AC, Lyanna in 152 AC, Barthogan in 153 AC, and Brandon in 156 AC;

Rickon and Jeyne had their second daughter, Serena, in 150 AC;

In 157 AC, twelve-year-old Sansa was betrothed to 16-year-old Jon Umber, the heir to Last Hearth;

In 160 AC, Rickon died at the age of 32 while fighting in Dorne for King Daeron I;

By the established succession laws, Sansa would have been Cregan's direct heir, but Cregan was unwilling to give Winterfell away to a woman and to her Umber husband-to-be, so at Lynara's suggestion, Sansa's betrothal was broken (with the understanding that Serena would marry the young Umber în her sister's place) and she was instead betrothed to Jonnel, Cregan's second son, and they would jointly be proclaimed Cregan's heirs;

Serena and her cousin Edric were heartbroken to hear that she would marry Jon Umber, because Serena and Edric were in love and had hoped to marry when they were older;

Edric was angry with his father and mother, and even angrier with his brother Jonnel for going through with his arranged marriage to Sansa; one stormy night in 161 AC, Edric climbed the tallest tower in Winterfell and threatened to jump. Jonnel was able to talk him down from the ledge, but as they were coming down, the tower was struck by lighning, causing a fire and a partial collapse; Edric escaped unharmed, but Jonnel lost his left eye during the collapse, and was known as Jonnel One-Eye forever after; he would never forgive his brother for the loss of his eye;

Jonnel and Sansa were married in 161 AC, when he was 13 and she was 16; Jonnel and Edric quarrelled during the wedding feast, and soon after Edric was sent to foster with Lord Manderly at White Harbor;

Serena married Jon Umber in 165 AC, when she was 15 and he was 24; at their wedding feast, 9-year-old Brandon Stark danced with 7-year-old Alys Karstark and was so charmed by her that he asked for her hand in marriage, and their parents betrothed them;

In 168 AC, 16-year-old Lyanna Stark, then betrothed to Lord Cerwyn's 12-year-old grandson, Robard, was sent south to attend the Princesses Daena, Rhaena, and Elaena in the Maidenvault; however, when the Grand Maester found her maidenhead to be broken during the mandatory examination imposed by King Baelor, she tearfully confessed that she had been deflowered by a travelling singer. Her shame was kept a secret, but she would spend the rest of her life as a silent sister;

Later in 168 AC, Sansa Stark died at the age of 23. Her widower, Jonnel Stark, remained Cregan's heir. Sansa's sister Serena (now Lady Umber) and their mother, Jeyne, were enraged because they saw Serena as the rightful heir to Winterfell. Jeyne left Winterfell and returned to the city of her birth, White Harbor;

In 170 AC, Serena became pregnant; she and her husband, Lord Jon Umber, hosted a grand mêlée at Last Hearth to celebrate (and to secretly gather allies to challenge Jonnel's claim to Winterfell). During the proceedings, eighteen men died and twenty-seven men were maimed; a mystery knight gravely injured Lord Jon and fatally injured his younger brother; when that knight took off his helm, he was revealed to be young Barthogan Stark, who was forever after known as "Barth Blacksword;"

Serena miscarried soon after the mêlée, and she would forever blame Barthogan for said miscarriage;

In 172 AC, Lord Cregan Stark, accompanied by his sons Jonnel, Barthogan, and Brandon, went to King's Landing to attend the coronation of Aegon IV; on the way back to Winterfell, he became the first Lord Stark to visit Greywater Watch since the Conquest. There his youngest son, Brandon, met and slept with Lady Wylla Fenn; Lonnel Snow, born in 173 AC, was Brandon's son;

In 173 AC, Jonnel Stark married Lady Robyn Ryswell when he was 25 and she was 15; his brother Edric did not attend the wedding;

In 174 AC, Brandon Stark married Alys Karstark when he was 18 and she was 16;

In 175 AC, Jon Umber died at the age of 34, leaving Serena Stark a widow.

In 176 AC, Lord Cregan Stark, the Old Man in the North, died at the age of 68; his son Jonnel succeeded him as Lord of Winterfell;

In 176 AC, Serena Stark travelled to White Harbor under the pretext of visiting her ailing mother, Lady Jeyne, but in fact to meet her cousin Edric, the love of her life, whom she married within a few days of her arrival;

Serena and Edric had four children: twin boys Cregard and Torrhen in 177 AC, Arrana in 180 AC, and Argelle in 182 AC;

Edric Stark died in 182 AC at the age of 32, shortly after the birth of his daughter Argelle, leaving his wife Serena devastated;

Brandon Stark and Alys Karstark had two sons during the same time: Rodwell in 177 AC and Beron in 179 AC;

In 184 AC, during the reign of Daeron II, the Skagosi rose in rebellion against House Stark;

In 186 AC, Jonnel Stark died at the age of 38; having sired no children by either of his wives, his heirs according to established succession laws would have been his nephews Cregard and Torrhen; however, the twins were only nine years old, and Jonnel, motivated both by hatred for his late brother and a belief that a boy lord should not be the Stark in Winterfell during a time of war, made a will naming his younger brother Barthogan his succesor, angering House Manderly in the process;

Lord Barthogan Stark died in battle in 187 AC at the age of 34, after having been Lord of Winterfell for only a year; his younger brother Brandon succeeded him and put down the Skagosi rebellion for good in 188 AC;

Lord Brandon Stark and Lady Alys Karstark struggled to have more children after Rodwell and Beron; they had two miscarriages in 183 and 184 AC, and a stillbirth in 186 AC;

In 189 AC, Lady Alys was pregnant once again when 16-year-old Lonnel "Lonny" Snow came to Winterfell to meet his father; there Lord Brandon acknowledged the little crannogman as his son and invited him to remain at Winterfell for as long as he wished;

It was both enraging and heartbreaking for Lady Alys to discover that the man she had loved since she was seven years old had slept with another woman, and the humiliation of his having welcomed the product of his affair under her roof was too much for their love to survive;

Lady Alys and Lord Brandon's last child, a girl named Arsa, was born in 190 AC; after her birth, Brandon and Alys were married in name only. The shadow of Brandon's son Lonny remained between them, as he had stayed in Winterfell and befriended his younger half-brothers, Rodwell and Beron;

In 196 AC, as the First Blackfyre Rebellion broke out, Lord Brandon Stark was urged by his sons Rodwell and Beron to declare for Daemon Blackfyre, but Lord Brandon wisely chose neutrality and declared for neither side;

In 197 AC, Lord Brandon Stark died at the age of 41;

The new Lord of Winterfell, Rodwell Stark, wanted to heal the decades-long rift between Winterfell and White Harbor by marrying Lord Manderly's daughter, Lady Myriame. In a double wedding held at White Harbor in 198 AC, Rodwell took Myriame to wife when they were both 21, while his brother Beron took to wife Lady Lorra Royce of Runestone when he was 19 and she was 18;

Serena Stark begrudgingly attended the double wedding; she would never forget the indignity of her claim to Winterfell, and the claims of her sons, being dismissed, but she had nonetheless gone on with her life. In 197 AC, she had married her daughter Arrana to her nephew by marriage, Lord Osric Umber of Last Hearth, who was 34 to Arrana's 17. Arrana and Osric would have two daughters together. In 198 AC, Serena would marry her daughter Argelle to Lord Robard Cerwyn. Lord Robard, who had lost the chance to marry a Stark maiden when young, had spied Argelle during the tourney held at White Harbor for the double wedding and had asked her mother for her hand; though he was 42 to Argelle's 16, Serena accepted. Argelle and Robard would have one daughter and one son together;

Rodwell and Myriame's marriage would end in tragedy; just 99 days after their wedding, Rodwell died in a fall from his horse during a hunt. His brother Beron would succeed him as Lord of Winterfell. To the surprise of many, Lady Myriame exercised her right to stay at Winterfell instead of returning to White Harbor;

Lord Beron and Lady Lorra's marriage was more successful, and they would have seven children together: Donnor in 200 AC, Willam in 202 AC, Artos in 204 AC, Berena in 205 AC, Alysanne in 207 AC, Errold in 210 AC, and Rodrik in 212 AC;

Serena Stark died during the Great Spring Sickness in 209 AC at the age of 59, still insisting that her sons Cregard and Torrhen had been cheated of their rights;

In 212 AC, Dagon Greyjoy and his ironmen started raiding the Stony Shore, and Lord Beron took a fatal wound fighting them;

Not long after, a hedge knight and his squire would walk into Winterfell...

any head cannons about the she wolves of winterfell?

I see Lorra Royce as a proto-Catelyn. Coming from a southern, Seven-following family, she may have felt very much like an unwelcome interloper. Any such feelings would be exacerbated by her status as the only post-conquest wife who is neither a Blackwood nor a northwoman. As a result, I imagine her as being very close to her good-sister, Myriame Manderly, who may well have understood Lorra best given their shared background.

Who do you think some of the she-wolves of Winterfell could be? I think strong contenders are one of Rickon Stark's daughters, Serena and Sansa, Myriame Manderly, Lorra Royce, maybe Melantha Blackwood if she's in the North yet. What do you think?

Per GRRM (at least back in 2006), the story of “The She-Wolves of Winterfell” will feature “five Lady Starks running Winterfell ... with four of them widows of a bunch of fairly recent former Lord Starks, and the current Lady Stark, whose 30-something husband is fading fast from a wound taken from fighting the Ironborn”. That Lord Stark would be Beron, which means that the “current Lady Stark” would be Lorra Royce (though whether she was from the senior line Royces of Runestone, or the junior line Royces from whom Nestor descends, we don’t yet know). Beron’s predecessor as Lord Stark was his brother, Rodwell, whose wife was Myriame Manderly, so presumably she will be the first of those Stark widows. Rodwell was the eldest son of Lord Brandon Stark, so I expect his and Beron’s mother, Alys Karstark, will be alive as well. (Hopefully she’s as brave and awesome as her name twin in the main novels.)

What makes this calculation somewhat tricky from here is that, according to the Stark family tree from TWOIAF, Barthogan (Brandon’s immediate predecessor as Lord of Winterfell) was unmarried. Barthogan’s own predecessor, Jonnel, was married, twice in fact - but unless he took a rather extraordinary step in putting aside one of his wives to marry the other, presumably we’ll only meet one of them. My money would be on Sansa Stark, because of the rich succession questions her presence could raise; as one of the daughters of Rickon Stark, Sansa had arguably a far better right to Winterfell than any of Cregan’s younger sons or their descendants. It’s remotely possible that either Jeyne Manderly (the wife of Rickon Stark) or Lynara Stark (the wife of Cregan) would have still been alive at this time, although my feeling would be no. If Jeyne was of an age with Rickon she would have been in her early 80s by the time of this story, and while that’s not the oldest age any (non-magical) person has reached in Westeros, it is certainly old by Westerosi standards; as for Lynara, while I would guess she was younger than Cregan, I can’t imagine that even at the youngest she was too much younger than her own stepson Rickon, and so probably the same calculus as with Jeyne would apply.

That’s only three Stark widows, of course, though I wouldn’t say that that would necessarily be all the fierce Stark ladies hanging around Winterfell (and let’s remember, not only has this been a work in progress long before the formalization of the Stark family tree in TWOIAF, but GRRM can’t math). Serena Stark was not a widow of a Stark lord (as Edric Stark, her uncle-husband, died before he could succeed), but she was still the senior heir of Rickon as well as the widow of a Stark. Serena also had four children by Edric, and while I’m suspicious their twin boys died young (they never ruled Winterfell either, and the family tree didn’t show them marrying or having children), their daughters lived to marry and have children of their own; indeed, I could see where Serena and her daughters would have emphasized that they were “Starks”, the rightful heirs to Winterfell. Cregan’s daughters by Alysanne Blackwood might have been alive, albeit probably in their 70s at least (although we don’t know if they ever married; no spouses were listed on the lineage). Cregan’s youngest daughter, Lyanna (how could GRRM ignore the thematic possibilities with that namesake?) and his granddaughter, Arsa (Beron’s sister), may also have been around Winterfell (though their marital fates are unknown as well).

It’s also worth pointing out that there may be one other lady around Winterfell around the time of “The She-Wolves of Winterfell”: Wylla Fenn, the mother of Brandon Stark’s bastard, Lonnel Snow. Although Lonnel, as an unlegitimated bastard, would not legally have any rights to Winterfell, as a son of a Stark lord (and his son by a northern noblewoman) in a period of uncertain succession, Lonnel might well have come forward (or been put forward by his mother) to grasp at power in the North. (And let’s be real, could it really be coincidental that GRRM named the mother of a bastard son of a Stark lord “Wylla”?)

Jon - Manning the Wall that Brandon the Builder built,         - was killed trying to save his sister Arya, Brandon Stark was killed trying to           save Lyanna Stark

Sansa - In the Vale with the House Royce, Beron Stark wed Lorra Royce 

Arya - The Mountain Clans are planning a revolt in her name, Rodrick Stark             wed Arya Flint

Bran - Beyond the Wall from where the First Men are from, the Starks come            from the First Men

Wait, the Royces follow the old gods?

Sorry, that was a bit of a leap on my part... but the Royces are First Men descendants who still wear bronze armor engraved with runes in the Old Tongue. And they support the Night's Watch, and are allies and friends of the Starks.

On the other hand, there are multiple knights in the family, and knighthood is a new gods thing, part of the Faith of the Seven. So perhaps they're not followers of the Old Gods... or maybe it's a mixed family, like the Stark kids?

Either way it seems that Lorra Royce wasn't so strong a follower of the Faith that her husband built a sept for her, unlike Ned and Cat. Or maybe she converted? (Is conversion even a thing? Both the Faith and the Drowned God have a "baptism"-type ceremony, but we know very little about any Old Gods ceremonies.)
