Looking back now, Cat's speech in S4 matches Alicent's current personality (at least until showrunners decide to change her again next season):

Cat saying she wished the boy would die. Then some time later Jon got the pox mirrors Alicent's "you're no son of mine" and years later Aegon was burned alive.

Cat saying Maester said he had a tiny chance of survival if he made it through the night. And she sat by his side in the darkness, praying for Jon to live. It mirrors Alicent's guilty sitting by Aegon's side.

Cat saying that she couldn't keep her promise. Then concluding that everything that happened since then, all the horrors, were because she couldn't love a motherless child. It mirrors Alicent's treatment of Aegon (def not love involved, when we compare to Helaena and Aemond or Daeron), even being her first, she couldn't love him like she loved the other ones.

keep thinking about how catelyn truly was the love of ned’s life and there never was anyone else before or after they married, but she never fully knows or accepts that because ned had to let her believe her cheated on her in order to keep jon safe.

YES! i love dany, SO MUCH! George has been writing her fantastically however.....I do think a lot of her fans are even most of the fandom in general fail to give her any good criticism. at least from what I've seen she's never really dealt with any hardcore criticism before!

it's kinda like if you were to criticize a beloved targaryen in general within the fandom, the targaryen stans are gonna flame your ass which is completely unnecessary. yes, targaryen characters are complex or at least a lot of them are imo but even complex characters can receive criticism and that's okay.

again, love and adore dany dearly but. still! (also hardcore agree on book!alicent and caitlyn receiving overdone hate and overdone criticism. sometimes i feel it's the same arguments over and over and it's like okay. enough. they're really interesting characters and again, criticism is fine! but i feel like it's more hate geared towards them than actual criticism. show!ali is a different story but book!alicent?? c'mon.)

Game of Thrones inflated Daenerys into an untouchable icon, and that created a fandom that treats any criticism of her as blasphemy. She is compelling precisely because she has serious flaws, but too many people refuse to acknowledge them.

The hatred toward Catelyn and book Alicent is far less understandable.

Most women placed in their circumstances would protect their children and family interests exactly as they did. Fandom simply grants endless sympathy to its favorites and none to women whose choices inconvenience them.
