My bro made a GREAT point that only 1 Sea Devil spoke in this episode.
We only get one view point, of the leader. Which makes their group feel so one dimensional. This coulda been fine if their motivation and plan felt more sympathetic (like in the original sea devils ep) but imo it falls flat since they seem blandly 'evil'.
It also would have been fine with a new alien threat. But with the history of Sea Devils and Silurians as an indigenous species who validly want their land back? It feels wrong? to show them as so blatantly 'evil'
I mean imagine if other sea devils hadn't agreed with the plan or had other thoughts. If we'd had one work with the Doctor and maybe even at the end become a part of the Pirate Queen's crew!
Hell even just a SPARK of individuality, like how in cold earth you had the warriors and the scientist (im not saying that was amazing but it added interest). You could even show why there's no dissent and further the leader Sea Devil's zealotry by showing them crush anyone who questioned them.
Idk maybe more sea devil characters wouldn't have helped. (I know this is a common problem with doctor who.) But they seemed so one dimensional and Dan legit just killing a bunch of nameless sea devils with no fanfare did not help.
