Yesterday, we had very strong winds blow through here. Some of those winds knocked an enormous tree onto the power lines that serve my neighborhood. The lines were taken all the way to the ground and two of the electric poles were broken in half from the strain. So we’ve had no power for right at 24 hours. And I admit I’m thoroughly annoyed and about to lose my ever-loving mind.
But, I have a car I can drive to get to food and a charger in that car to keep my phone going. My mother’s house has hot water and heat, and it’s only a twenty minute drive away. My college boy is there now because he procrastinated about doing laundry all weekend and now he has to use her washer before heading back to school. If the power isn’t on by bedtime, Sons 1 and 3 and I will head over there with our dog to sleep in a place with heat and a warm shower because last night was tolerable but not exactly cozy. (Mr. DKNC is out flying and missing all the fun, of course!)
There have been at least 4 trucks and generally about a dozen guys from the electric company working on cleaning up this mess since very early this morning, and it’s actually embarrassing the amount of complaints some of my neighbors have thrown at them. Get a grip! The electric company employees didn’t blow down the tree. They can’t wave a magic wand and restore the power. They’re pretty much doing everything they can and are at least cautiously optimistic we’ll have power by tonight. Some time tomorrow by the latest.
So 24-48 hours without power at the most. In a place with food, heat, water, communication, transportation, etc. available for everyone affected. Yes, it’s irritating and inconvenient. But it is NOT the end of the world. I’ve now listened to a few too many heartfelt diatribes about the “poor response” of the electric company to this “crisis” from people who 100% bought the Angry Orange’s assertions that the response to power outages in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria were an “unsung success.” Ugh!! I’m afraid I cannot have yet another conversation about putting things into perspective without saying something nasty so it’s time to go for another drive. I need to charge my phone again anyway.
