Song Review: Eric Clapton - “Losing Hand”

Eric Clapton - the guitar god Clapton, that is - shows up on “Losing Hand.”

Slowhand’s Ray Charles cover was released only on Japanese editions of 2010’s Clapton. It’s now gone worldwide as the lead promo single from The Complete Reprise Studio Albums - Volume II, arriving Jan. 19, 2023.

The arrangement is nothing flashy - standard 12-bar blues anchored with brushed drums and piano. Yet Clapton plays the crap out of it, scattering stuttering notes across the four-minute runtime as he sings of love as a poker game against a cheater.

It’s not the sort of rarity to convince listeners to drop big coin on a boxset. But “Losing Hand” is worth every bit of four minutes of listening time just to be reminded of Clapton’s prowess.
