Lost Rewatch: 3x19 The Brig
I mean, technically this is a John episode, but I think we all know who the real star is
So I see that when Locke said he tried to convince the Others to take Kate with them, that was just... a lie
You know, Iāve never thought about this before - how do they know that Sawyer killed someone in Sydney? There werenāt any cameras around, I donāt think - he wouldnāt be that stupid. Maybe they know that he got a gun, and maybe they know that it was the same type of gun that killed whats-his-face. But that could very easily be a coincidence
I mean, it goes without saying that John and Benās scenes are all gold, right?
Locke is very good at manipulating Sawyer this episode - all the times he brings up the o.g. Sawyer, and our Sawyerās desire to kill him, without ever explicitly saying that. It does make it a bit strange that he is so susceptible to everyone elseās manipulations, though
If Naomiās mission is need-to-know, and she doesnāt know all that much - only enough about Ben to find and capture him - how does she know enough about Penny and Desmond to successfully con everyone into thinking she works for her?
So, where are the kids? Theyāre part of the Others now, we know that, but they donāt show up this episode at all
Hereās a little thing I noticed this time round - Rousseau showing up at the Black Rock for dynamite seems just like a throwaway gag, but it actually aligns with the narrative perfectly - Juliet finds out about Sunās pregnancy, tells Jack that night, and then the very next episode we see Danielle getting dynamite. It all fits, and I love it
Richard says that Ben has been āwasting [the Othersā] time with novelties like fertility problemsā, but arenāt they there to defend the Island. If there wasnāt anyone to defend against, and the Candidates havenāt arrived yet, why not stop some of your people from dying?
Also, Richard, you were literally the person who recruited Juliet! Clearly you didnāt think it was aĀ ānoveltyā then!?
Oh, wow, Cooper. On top of all your failures as a human being, you gave fuel to theĀ āthey were dead the whole timeā theory fire
Jesus Christ, Josh Holloway can act. Ugh, the scene where he kills Cooper kills me, for every reason imaginable
And of course itās not a satisfying revenge kill

This is, debatably, the single stupidest thing Kate does
Not only does she tell Jack about Nadia without consulting anyone, after just being sworn to secrecy, but she tells right in front of Juliet!!!
Who she vocally distrusts!!!
Kate the independent character would never do that. Too bad the writers have aĀ āKate does something stupidā button right next to their desk for when theyāve run out of ideas
It really rubs me the wrong way that Sawyer asks if Locke was aĀ ācrippleā. That word really doesnāt sound like something Sawyer would call someone at this point in his journey
Overall Review:
So, this whole episode was building up to That Scene. So if it had flopped, the whole episode would have with it. But thankfully, they completely knocked it out of the park. Unfortunately, I donāt remember them really going anywhere with it. This should be a huge moment for Sawyer, and he starts acting a lotless selfishly from this point on, but I donāt think he ever talks to anyone about what he did, and how he felt about it
