Hi, I have a quick question about pigeon rescue -- I'm in the Washington DC, DMV area, and a neighbor who knows me as the weirdo critter wrangler saw a pure white pigeon with a band on its leg among the local flock of standard-issue ferals.

The birds get fed by various neighbors, and the local outdoor cats are mostly well fed enough to generally leave the birds alone, so I figure he's got some chance as a feral, but this neighbor has seen the bird a couple of times and looped me in in case I knew anything. I don't, but I figure a banded white pigeon is probably somebody's little guy of some dimension -- do you know of anyone in the area that might be able to give the bird a soft landing if I happen to get eyes on it? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

Most likely, a wedding release survivor, but the chances of him/her being a lost pet are not 0, so if you can get hold of the band number, he/she could potentially be traced back to the breeder or buyer.

Off the top of my head, I don't know of anyone in that area of Washington willing to take a stray or looking to adopt.

But we have a pretty wide spread community between here, Facebook, and X.

I can reach out and see if there is anyone closer that could help directly.

This sweet thing is a lost racing homer i picked up yesterday. This is them after i gave them a bath to rid them of some mites they picked up

This bird did what is called a "self rescue" it has ended up away from its flock or loft one way or another so it sought out a human as we tend to be food sources.

The woman who orginally caught them noted they were really friendly and it was easy to catch them (sign of a sick pigeon) but let them go.

Thankfully after getting in contact with me and being educated about pigeons they were able to catch the pigeon as it came right back and i picked it up later that day.

So far they seem to either have a neurological issue or they have a physical injury after observing them for a bit i think its an injury.

It seems hard for them to open their wings and one of their legs seems a bit weak and sore. The pigeon makes pain grunts when wings are opened.

Im not experienced enough to tell if this due to racing burn out or not but they seem to be in good spirits and have a very hearty appetite. They do have a heavy worm load but the wormer seems to be doing a good job clearing that out.

I really think this bird was well loved regardless if it was from a racing loft or not so i am trying to find its owner

Rehabber got this uninjured pigeon in- it’s banded but they haven’t been able to trace the band. Due to its band, good looks, and reasonable disposition, we’re worried someone might be missing a pet!

Backlit phone pics aren’t great, so- beak is pink, eyes are light yellow/off white, body is brown/dark red, tail is white, wings are primarily white (maybe pied, I didn’t get a good look) with tipped leading primaries. BAND IS GREEN. Found in central Indiana.

I’m also curious if this bird is/takes after a specific breed. Hmu, pigeon people!
