Trent is Chaotic evil that's the difference
I don’t think it is (and I have some other alignment thoughts to write while at work and post this evening) - not that he’s not chaotic evil (he is) but chaotic doesn’t mean you lack control over your actions. Vax from campaign 1 is a good example of a character with a chaotic alignment who often behaves in a respectful/affable manner. It’s more that one of his goals is specifically to fuck with Caleb, and in that particular manner. He could play things as being truly repentant, or he could have pretended to not realize who Caleb was - he just didn’t.
More generally on alignment while Darth Vader = Lawful Evil and The Joker = Chaotic Evil are good examples it does mean I think the chaotic evil stereotype now includes some element of being unhinged when one can be chaotic evil and still 100% calculated which is a far scarier thing.
