i love that the movie ending of lotr for the uninitiated looks like such a beautiful, gentle metaphor for death… no, they’re actually sailing off to go get drunk for the rest of eternity with their kinslaying cousins. heaven isn’t a metaphor here and bilbo’s coming to party

You know in a sense it feels a bit like how the elves mustve felt when the earth was made round. All of a sudden nobody can see it (the notes) but you. You see it. you see valinor, in its splendor, still here.

The thing is I'm a sucker for trashy movies and bad adaptations, every single piece of tolkien media lives rent free in my head and mind and soul, but up until the 2000s "bad" adaptations were considered so mostly due to the lack of budget and/or the small number of people trying to adapt a beloved fantasy classic to the big screen. Say what you want about the Rankin/Bass hobbit and Bakshi lotr but the whimsy was there, even if it was a very specific 1970s kind of whimsy. I will defend them forever. Now everything is so pretty and polished and perfect to the point that it all looks fake and flat. Don't get me wrong, Peter Jackson did a wonderful aesthetic job with the lotr trilogy, it was in fact very pretty, but he also had the wisdom to not make Literally Everything appear polished. After that, we lost the prettiness to polishedness balance, mostly due to the disastrous combination of improved camera quality and reduced costumes quality that plagues all the big franchises. I could go on forever about this, but in conclusion: do I trust Peter Jackson to make a fun and entertaining movie? Yes. Kinda. Depends if he gets cgi crazy like in the hobbit trilogy. Do I trust Peter Jackson to make a good Silmarillion adaptation in this day and age? eeeeh not really :/

Earlier today I was thinking about the way that hobbits treat Frodo post-Quest.

The books say that few hobbits know or care to know about Frodo’s adventure, and that is heartbreaking by itself. He suffers all that torment and sacrifices everything out of love for his people, and they react with indifference. And it wouldn’t surprise me if some hobbits treated him with open disdain.

In the first chapter of LOTR, before Frodo himself enters the story, we see hobbits gossiping about Frodo and about his parents’ death. His parents died more than twenty years earlier, but the townsfolk can’t resist speculation that their deaths started with one parent pushing the other into the river. If they use such a tragic event as an opportunity to gossip and cast judgment, then they probably do the same with Frodo’s journey.

I can imagine hobbits staring pointedly at Frodo’s four-fingered hand, gossiping and making false assumptions about what misadventures he faced during his adventure, gossiping about his mysterious illnesses, maybe even whispering about him when he’s in sight and possibly within earshot.

Frodo wasn’t exactly a welcome member of hobbit society before the Quest, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that gets worse when he comes back so visibly changed.

was at the Fellowship of the Ring screening and the person a couple of seats down from me had brought this huge paper bag full of pastries, and honestly I wasn’t even bothered by the bag rustling because that person understood the assignment more than anyone else in the room, including me. like I am not altogether convinced that they weren’t actually a hobbit
