Louis Vasquez to the Broncos

Mike Garafolo reports that he signed a 4 year 23.5 million dollar deal with 13 million guaranteed.

Kevin Acee says that the Chargers were never really serious players for his services. Losing him will hurt the offensive line in 2013, but there is an added sting in losing him to a division rival.

San Diego Chargers: Free Agency and Draft Questions

So hopefully you've perused the various posts I've made on the state of the San Diego Chargers current roster. Now comes the fun, or terrifying, part. Free Agency kicks off in earnest in roughly 5 hours. By my count, the Chargers need to fill these roles by the end of free agency and the draft:

Change of pace RB, back up TE if they cut McMichael, potentially new starting Guards, and maybe new Tackles as well. They have to retain some depth at the defensive line positions, find a new Mike Linebacker if Mouton isn't ready, potentially find a 2 new corners and figure out if Stuckey or Taylor can take on the starting SS job and if not, find one of those.

But hey, at least the organization locked up the kicker and the long snapper, right? The lack of activity isn't all their fault I'm sure. Louis Vasquez has been reported (where the report came from, I cannot remember, but I'm not claiming to be breaking new here) as wanting to test the market. He's the big chain in the future chain of events. Whether or not he signs and for how much changes how the Chargers operate. They're probably working on him and the likes of Aubrayo Franklin and/or Vaughn Martin now, as Michael Gehlken has tweeted recently. Some positions, like the change of pace back, a new TE, DLine depth, and a new corner or safety would probably best be found in free agency where veterans who've proven they can play can help the Bolts. I know that Telesco wants to make the team younger this year, but unless he picks up a slew of low priced veterans, the Charger could be fielding some very young players at some key positions.

I'd expect that it doesn't matter whether or not Vasquez comes back, the Chargers will be using a pick on an offensive lineman in the first round. With 5 top prospects including Luke Joekel, Eric Fisher, Lane Johnson, Chance Wormack, and Jonathan Cooper at the top of the draft, it seems that the Chargers need would match the 2013 Draft's bounty. The Chargers need at Offensive line would become paramount if they choose to cut Jared Gaither, a move seen by some as inevitable, according to Kevin Acee. In a draft that is well stocked with good, but not great talent, the first few rounds could provide starters. The Chargers could look to getting a few new starting linemen, or a new corner or a new linebacker. What I do know is that everyone will know more about what the Chargers need in the draft only after free agency has been in full swing. I'd rather see the draft happen first, but that is NFL dream land currently.
