Apogee & Perigee
The toy robots shown above are based on a series of Japanese whiskey commercials from about 1983-1984. The closest comparison I can think of is like Spuds MacKenzie in the US.
The toys above are remote control (R/C, top picture) and simple wind-up (W/U, bottom picture). They have poseable arms and heads. The RC pair was 3500 yen, the wind-up pair 580 yen (MSRP in 1984). These toys (and others) were made by Bandai in Japan and Hong Kong, and also exported to the US.
The robots are named Apogee (the taller one, who is male) and Perigee (the shorter one, who is female).
These robots are (as best as I can determine) from a series of TV commercials made by Tohokushinsha Film Corp (株式会社東北新社), for Nikka 'Mild' Whiskey (ニッカウヰスキー株式会社) [then and now owned by Asahi]. The toy packaging bears a licensing sticker from Tohokushinsha. Sometimes the pair are called "Mild Robo" or "Mild Boy" and "Mild Girl" on the packaging.
I can't tell if the original commercials used practical RC robots, live action puppets or miniatures, or stop-motion miniatures, but I do know that a functional (RC), 'life size' pair of robots were shown at at least one Japanese toy fair in 1984.
In the western import packaging (completely different from the Japanese packaging), Bandai re-branded the robots as "Lov-Bo-Gi-Bots," sometimes shortened to "Lov-Bots." Each individual toy robot was also renamed, loosely reflecting it's main play feature. The toys were also packed with a mini story book explaining their fictive origin, and with a mail-in offer for an undescribed 'surprise.'
I'm impressed by how adorable these robots are in their original form, and how much effort Bandai put into rebranding them for the western market.
